Intensive reading I Class website:cc.sjtu.edu.cn综合英语1 Instructor: e-mail: mobile: General Activities and Grading Guideline: Students will be graded on a 100-point scale and the final grade for this class consists of seven components as follows: 1)Attendance(5%)-Students are required to attend ALL classes scheduled and take an active part in classroom activities.Attendance will be recorded every class.If,for some justifiable reason,you are not able to come to class on a certain day,advance notices to the instructor are required,except for emergency cases.Supporting documents (e.g.doctor's note)should be submitted in order for an absence to be excused.Each unexcused absence in class would reduce your final grade by 2%.If a student misses the equivalent of two weeks of classes,then this can result in failing the course. 2)Class presentation(5%)-Each student will be asked to make 1 presentation in the class.To deliver the presentation in an expository manner,students may use computer. Topics can range from campus issues,daily life experiences,hot issues in society to abstract ideas toward life.The presentation should last about 5 minutes and be ready for inquires or questions from both the teacher and the classmates. 3)In-class quizzes(5%)-For each module,one/two dictation quizzes will be given to test the students'vocabulary improvement.Twenty words from either the intensive reading or extensive reading texts will be checked.Each dictation will be graded on a 5-point scale and the average score of all the exercises will be calculated in the final grade. 4)Study journal (15%)-Each student is required to read 3 books and keep a study journal: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (Week 1-4) 1984 by George Orwell (week 5-9) Typical American by Gish Jen (week 10-15) The journal is supposed to include,but not limited to,the date,new words and expressions,brief summary and a few comments.Each of your journal should have a minimum of 1000 words.The journal must be submitted on the 5th,10th and 15th week respectively.Late submission would reduce your score for this part by 1%for each day passing the deadline. 5)Oral test (10%)-The oral test will be arranged on the last class week.It aims at testing students'communicative ability developed through this semester's study and their understanding of the texts.It will account for 10%of your total grade.Make-up tests will not be permitted except in the case of illness or emergency situations. 6)Final test(55%)-The final is a combination of achievement and proficiency test.
