Unit Nine:Who Killed Benny Paret? Teaching objectives: To acquaint the students with some basic knowledge of prizefighting To help students master some boxing terms and their Chinese equivalents To make students understand what a magazine editorial is and how the writer expresses his viewpoint. To help students better understand the general methods of editorial writing and the characteristics of the writer's style To make students understand what a parallelism is and when it is used Time Allocation and Teaching Procedure: About 4 sessions (8 class hours)are needed for this unit. 1st session 1.Pre-reading questions: Test students on the background reading materials and see if they have a general idea of Text I and ask students to fill in the blanks with relevant information. 2.Study of Text I: Ask students to decide which is the topic sentence,what are the events narrated and what is the writer's viewpoint,and see how the writer relates his view to the event in his narration. Analyzing the structure of the text:involving the students in summing up the techniques of editorial writing Ask students to sum up the main idea of Text I. 3.Assignment ◆Review Text I. ◆Preview TextⅡ ◆Read Text III 2nd session L.Continuation of the study of Text上: Allow students some time to ask questions on Text I.
