China and the First Geneva Conference Zhao Xuegong (College of History,Nankai University.Tianjin 300071.China) Abstract:The first Geneva Conference w as the beginning of Chinese participat ion in important int erna ional affairs as a major pow er.The Chinese delegation led by Premier Zhou Enlai carefully analyzed the situation and studied the policies,trying to mediate the divergences of all participators.T hrough the excellent and effec ive diplomatic activities,the Chinese deegation made significant cont ributions to the success of the conference,and smashed the American purpose of making the conference failure.T his conference not only achieved the peace in Indochina.relaxed the tension in South East Asia,but also made China gain m uch stable circumstances in south border.At the same time,the Chinese delegation grasped the opportunity,and carried out the positive diplomatic activities,making effort to improve Chinese-British relat ions with the est ablishment of diplomatic reations at the levd of charge d'affaires. and opened the gate of Chinese-American ambassador ial talks w hich lasted more than ten years.The success of the Geneva conference was an important triumph of the realistic Chinese diplomacy and it greatly increased China's position in the w orld.
