Besides,we consider that link2 may explain link1.The exams taken by students of liberal arts often require more memory skills than those taken by students of science and engineering. As we all know, majors like law and language which are typical liberal arts obviously need students to memorize a lot of things while majors like mechanical engineering and pharmacy require more calculation. So an improvement in memory is sure to boost academic perfommance among students of liberal arts. 6 Conclusions(洪逸宁) 6.1 Summary of objectives and approaches of this paper This essay aims to explore musical instruments'boost in the academic perfommances of students in different majors, thus providing pertinent suggestions to students regarding whether they should learn to play an instrument,or persist in it,as well as how much time and energy they should invest in instrument learning. 6.2 Major findings of this paper In this research,we have figured out that while musical instruments can help students of liberal arts achieve better academic performance, they have slight influence on students of science and engineering. Most students think musical instruments have improved their memory, yet few students consider musicinstruments have helped them in Maths 6.3 Important implications of this paper's findings 1)For those children whose parents anticipate them to major in liberal arts in the future, musical instruments'learning is a good method to improve their academic performances. For those whose parents want them to major in scienoe and engineering, musical instruments should serve merely as a kind of hobby or special skill, and shouldn't occupy too much time of childhood. 2)As for us college students, those who major in liberal arts should not give up their talents in musical instruments. But for those who major in science and technology, they should make full consideration about how much time they should set aside playing the instruments,so that involvement in music is less likely to affect their study. To have higher scores in courses requiring lots of memorizing, such as history and politics, students can play the instruments for a while when preparing for exams to improve their memory,as well as relax themselves. 3)Universities should have more selective courses regarding music instruments, and these courses mainly aim at students majoring in liberalarts. 6.4 Future work needed in the field Various defects still exist in our research.1)Sampled students are mainly limited in SJTU,Minhang District. As everyone knows, the number of male students account for a large portion of SITUers. In addition, students in Minhang District mainly major in science and engineering. Thus,we lack sufficient samples of female students and students majored in liberal arts.2)Since SJTU doesn't have a major called "music",we lack professional musical instrument players. All we have got is amateur players engaged in other majors.3)Our sample is too small and fails to lend sound supportfor our research. More work still needs to be done to perfect our research. For instanoe,we can interact with students in other schools, especally those schools having more female students and musical majors such as East China Normal University. 12/1412 / 14 Besides, we consider thatlink2 may explain link1.
