U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission(SEC) A U.S. government agency, whose mission is to protect investors and maintain the integrity of the securities markets. The Commission was set up by the U.s. Congress in 1933 in response to the aftermath of the "Black Monday, the great stock Market Crash of 1929. It purpose was to restore investor confidence in the U.s. capital markets by providing more structure and government oversight.
