VlPs cannot replicate in vivo because they are hollow and lack a viral genome, but they can stimulate the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies be- cause they mimic the morphology and conformation of native viruses. Human papillomavirus virus (HPV) prophylactic vaccines have been commercialized worldwide: Cervarix( GlaxoSmithKline) and Gardasil ( Merck)are based on virus-like particles. Therefore, study of the assembly of HPv vLPs is important for the research and development of vaccines. We describe progress in the assembly of HPv virus-like partr cles in the past decade to aid development of hpv vaccines as well as genetically engineered vaccines of Key words: Human papillomavirus( HPV); Major capsid protein Ll: Virus-like particles(VLPs); Vaccine; Assembly Funding: National Natural Science Foundation of China(31670935): Research on assembly mechanism and cross-type immunogenicity of Hu man papillomavirus virus-like particles heterozygous for different types of pentamer.
