Chun Tao told me of her experience: AIDS day was coming and the television show was being prepared. At the time,I did not want to do the show, did not want to at all.But that nurse told us again and again that we should have a show.I felt that they had done a lot for me,right? And also [the nurses]often came to see me and cared about me.It seems the show was to promote the"home for love and care"[the AIDS wardl. When I thought about this point,I said:OK, OK,OK,I will do it for you. Then I did the show for them several times. But I was all covered by mosaic,I should not have been recognized. But people who know me all knew it was me.Just at that time,December the first, central television and Beijing television stations both broadcast it.I left [Beijing]on the ninth of December to come back home.People at home,my relatives all said,we saw you on the TV,blah, blah.Even covered with mosaic, they are familiar with me,they could tell from the voice.I said no no no,how could I do the show? The idiom of expose was used not only in a passive sense, such as"being exposed."It was also used as an active term,as in to expose. This active usage means infected people were not just victims to be exposed by others, but also actively exposing themselves.Keer,a man who had sold blood in Henan, told me in 2003 of his plan to expose himself to the media. However,he con- sulted with his mother about exposing himself:"I mentioned this issue and negotiated with my mum.I said if I flare up,I can't afford it.My economic situation can't afford the flare up.I want to use the media to expose myself so that I can get aid.” For Keer,to expose himself was for the purpose of getting public atten- tion and aid.But he would not have exposed himself unless he desperately needed financial support for his treatments. In his case,to expose means to disclose his HIV status to the public. It could cause public attention and might bring both harassment and support from society.Keer decided to do so,but he was also worried about the harassment such exposure could bring to his family.
