T he influ2 ence of the p reparation condition s on the size and the crystalline phase of the T iO 2 crystallite w as studied by m ean s of X2ray diffraction (XRD ) techn ique, and the op tical p roperties of the T iO 2 sam p les w ere characterized by diffu se re2 flectance spectro scopy (DR S) and fluo rescence spectro scopy (FS). Q uan tum size effect w as ob served fo r the T iO 2 sam p les w ith crystallite size less than ca. 16 nm w h ich w as determ ined by DR S and FS. T hese T iO 2 sam p les w ere also per2 fo rm ed as a pho tocatalyst in degradation of pheno l. In the size range 10 nm~ 30 nm , the pho tocatalytic activity increases drastically w ith the decreasing of the crystallite size, indicating that quan tum size effect p lays a very im po rtan t ro le in im p roving the pho tocatalytic activity of the T iO 2 sam p les w ith sm all crystallite size.
