John Fenn's 60-year career in chemistry includes constant intellectual movement,with contributions that changed how chemistry was done marking the way.In 2002,the Nobel Prize awards committee honored Fenn for his invention of a pioneering technique that allows researchers to determine the mass of large biological molecules,such as proteins,peptides and DNA.Later, he was elected to the National Academy of Scienceis comprised of nearly 2,000 members and Fenn is its only Virginia chemist. John's career has included time in industry (Monsanto (1940- 43),Sharples Chemicals (1943-45)and Experiment Inc.(1945-52) and academe (Princeton University (1952-66),Yale University (1967-87,then becoming professor emeritus)and VCU(1994- present).Many of his projects have drawn interest and support from such government agencies as the Office of Naval Research, National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health.
