John Fenn's 60-year career in chemistry includes constant intellectual movement, with contributions that changed how chemistry was done marking the way.In 2002,the Nobel Prize awards committee honored Fenn for his invention of a pioneering technique that allows researchers to determine the mass of large biological molecules, such as proteins, peptides and DNA.Later, he was elected to the National Academy of Scienceis comprised of nearly 2,000 members and Fenn is its only Virginia chemist. John's career has included time in industry (Monsanto (1940- 43),Sharples Chemicals (1943-45)and Experiment Inc.(1945-52) and academe (Princeton University (1952-66),Yale University (1967-87,then becoming professor emeritus)and VCU(1994- present). Many of his projects have drawn interest and support from such government agencies as the Office of Naval Research, National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. He has served as a visiting professor at Trento University in Italy, the University of Tokyo, the Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore and the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing and as a distinguished lecturer at several other institutions.Author of one book and more than 100 papers,he is sole or co-inventor on 19 patents.
