nalytical Overview This map shows population density by basin, expressed as people per square kilometer, 19 of people in each watershed by the land area of each Science Inform eEarthTrends 2002 WorkAnalytical Overview: Source: A medium resolution global dataset, Gridded Population of the World (CIESIN 1995) was used to calculate population density. The dataset was compiled from the latest available census data at a variety of sub-national district levels, standardized to 1994. The total number of people in each basin was calculated using a 5-minute population count grid. Population density was calculated by dividing the total number of people in each watershed by the land area of each watershed. Revenga, C., S. Murray, J. Abramovitz, and A. Hammond, 1998. Description: This map shows population density by basin, expressed as people per square kilometer. The most densely populated basins are found in India, China, and parts of Europe. In Africa, the most densely populated basin is Lake Victoria, a subbasin of the Nile watershed. © EarthTrends 2002 World Resources Institute. All rights reserved.
