上产文廷大学 Dissecting and Solving the Problem of Student Procrastination in Chinese Universities Introduction:(Wu Xinyu) Procrastination is defined as putting off tasks intentionally and usually habitually and for a reason held to be reprehensible,say,laziness and indifference to responsibility (The Encyclopedia Britannica),which is briefly explained as 'deferring action,especially without good reason.'(Oxford English Reference Dictionary,1996).Academic procrastination is the performance of procrastination on campus,germane to studying tasks_(Chen,Yan Lin, 2013).Academic procrastination among college students is prevalent and troublesome_(Glick Orsillo,2015).Previous researches have dug out assorted kinds of causes of procrastination in universities,such as:perceived low level of task enjoyment,estimated inability to do the task and so on.(Sims,2014).It has also been found that the deleterious effects of procrastination embrace physical(Tice Baumeister,1997),mental(Burka Yuen,1983), and social ones (including academic ones)(Haycock,McCarthy Skay,1998;Sims,2014;Glick Orsillo,2015).Recently,academic procrastination has risen up seriously in universities (Pang Han,2009).Almost 50%of college students procrastinate problematically and consistently(Haycock,McCarthy Skay,1998;Steel,2007).75%of all the undergraduates deem themselves procrastinators(Steel,2007).Up to 60%of students have already uttered a desire to reduce their AP(Grunschel,Patrzek Fries,2013).Nowadays there are many researches and essays pertaining to procrastination (Pang Han,2009),nevertheless a comprehensive study of 'University student procrastination in China',which contains analysis of causes,influences and approaches,is rare in this realm.Since academic procrastination has become an increasingly obvious and serious problem in Chinese universities(Liu Yan,2014;Liu,2012),it is imperative for us to dissect the causes and influences of academic procrastination thoroughly and find out reasonable approaches to help students overcome it.Dissecting and Solving the Problem of Student Procrastination in Chinese Universities 4 Introduction:(Wu Xinyu) Procrastination is defined as putting off tasks intentionally and usually habitually and for a reason held to be reprehensible, say, laziness and indifference to responsibility (The Encyclopedia Britannica), which is briefly explained as ‘deferring action, especially without good reason.’(Oxford English Reference Dictionary,1996).
