Causes of student procrastination(Jiang Yuxi) Many students suffer the procrastination face a phenomenon that they admit they are procrastinators but they feel confused about why they become procrastinators.Finding the reason why so many undergraduate students are procrastinators is very important for analyzing the boom of procrastination on Chinese campus. We will analyze the causes from three aspects-gene,environment and individual. 2.1 Genetic causes Most scientists believe that gene decides the whole human beings. We can find evidence about a person's appearance, talent, personality and so on,according to the gene sequence.People tend to do what they like but not what they must do. Procrastination always happens when we face an affair which is not our desires. Someone forces us to finish it before the deadline. Our natural reaction is to choose to do the affair we want to do first, and then do the affair out of our desire as late as we can.Instant gratification(HeferBembenutty,Stuart A.Karabenick,2004)is one of the most important genetic causes.Everyone enjoys it.Instant gratification is what lets us feel happy and satisfied in a short period.Procrastination can make people feel instant gratification when they delay the affair and do other things. The well-being rating will double when we ignore the deadline. It decided by genes and hard to get rid of it. 2.2 Environmental causes Although gene decides many parts of a person, environment is the key to initiate our potential reaction.Especially in Chinese universities, environment really affects lots of freshman and the effect will last for their whole college life. Many procrastinators live in the surroundings full of procrastinators.Procrastinators think it is the college life style or classmate that makes them become procrastinators. As we can see that, environment pushes the procrastination to occur. We will analyze the environmental causes from the following aspects. 2.2.1 Insufficient work pressure College life is no longer like high school days. There are no teachers or parents who push us to finish our homework immediately, also professors will not always check your assignment plan every day. After 12-year high intension compulsory education, students become tired and don't want the high-speed life anymore. They need time to have a rest and the loose college life makes students relax.Usually the assignment will have a due time and the work and rest regime no longer exists.Doing homework will be at the bottom of the plan list so that procrastination comes into our life.Pressure is the key motivation to push you advance. The insufficient work pressure makes student slack and not pay full attention to the work they need to finish. This is why procrastination is common when we enter the university. 5

Therefore, there has not been a well-accepted conclusion of the influence of academic procrastination, and thus our group decides to add a multiple choice in our questionnaire, doing the research to make out perspectives of consequences of academic procrastination in Chinese universities and dig out which conditions students in Chinese colleges are in line with.
