We have done some research to investigate why learners with higher motivation can learn English better.First of all, we did a questionnaire investigation on how students were motivated in their English learning, whether they liked the culture, liked to study abroad,or just liked to pass required courses. Then we did an empirical study by dividing the students into groups of lower and higher motivation and gave each group of students the same amount of language instructions for two years. The result shows that students with higher motivation actually do better than those with lower motivation. It also shows that students who likes the culture of the target language show a continuous effort in learning English
