This paper analyzes the underdevelopment in China's rural areas over the past 40 years, as demonstrated in the population outflow, inadequate industrial development, low income, lack of vitality and prosperity. It then attempts to identify the causes such as urban-rural dual barriers, income gap, rural dispersion, and urbanization. By focusing on the contradiction between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people,'s ever-growing needs for a better life, this paper reveals the inevitable historical trend for China to achieve the two centenary goals and prosperity for all and to act based on its national and agricultural situations. It then explores realistic paths for rural vitalization through inspiring dogenous driving force, developing organic farming, township development, industrial transfer, training professional farmers, and institutional innovation.
