Meanings in Dreams From flying through space to having a conversation with a deceased relative, almost everyone has dreams that scare or confuse them. Many try to gain insight into the meanings behind these night visions,if they are lucky enough to remember them the next day.Cultures for thousands of years have grappled with dreams, often believing they carried some kind of mystical significance. There are some very real issues that are being worked out in dreams. 1.Images According to G.William Domhoff of University of California Santa Cruz, images in dreams are a way of clearing extra thoughts and events from the previous day. They can symbolize an event that happened earlier in our day, week or life,or a problem that must be dealt with, such as a car dealer thinking about Buick, symbolizing competition that has moved in to the area.Sigmund Freud believed that individual images meant specific things, such as little animals representing siblings and water representing birth. 2.Dialogues Often we have social interactions where there are particular things we wish we said to another individual but did not.Often we repeat some form or representation of this dialogue in a dream with that individual or someone else and say what we really meant and wanted to say in real life.Sometimes there is no meaning to dialogues in dreams if they are syphoned off from words that are being spoken around an individual while they are dreaming, according to the University of New Hampshire. 3.Colors

Colors

In the 1950s,most dream scholars thought that dreams were mostly black and white. However, this was found to be untrue.Color imagery is common in dreams as they are mostly visual things, with visual neurons continuously moving during REM sleep.Colors mean different things to different people; however, there are general emotions that can be associated with each dominant color, such as anger for red and hopefulness for green. 4.People People who are important in our lives during the time of the dream often show up in our sleeping images.Sigmund Freud believed that these were leftovers from interactions or other social stimulation that went on throughout the day. These individuals also represent either a good or bad time in someone's life and carry that feeling into the dream due to association. From eHow.com
