1-5 Wuhan University of Technology The primary purpose is to present methods for analyzing the stresses and deflections developed in any given type of structure when it is subjected to an arbitrary dynamic loading. This objective may be considered to be an extension of standard methods of structural analysis, which generally are concerned with static loading only, to permit consideration of dynamic loading as well. The staticloading condition may be looked upon merely as a special form of dynamic loading. The static and dynamic methods of analysis are fundamentally different in character. 1.1 Introductionfundamental objective of structural dynamics analysis

Wuhan University of Technology1.1 Introductionfundamental objective of structural dynamics analysisThe term dynamic may be defined simply as timevarying;A dynamic load is any load of which its magnitude, direction,and/or position varies with time. The structural responses to a dynamic load, i.e., the resultingstresses anddeflections,is also timevarying,or dynamic1-6

1-7 Wuhan University of Technology Two basically different approaches are available for evaluating structural response to dynamic loads: deterministic and nondeterministic. The choice of method to be used in any given case depends upon how the loading is defined. If the time variation of loading is fully known, it will be referred to as a prescribed dynamic loading. The analysis of the response of any specified structural system to a prescribed dynamic loading is defined as a deterministic analysis. 1.1 Introductionfundamental objective of structural dynamics analysis

1-8 Wuhan University of Technology If the time variation is not completely known but can be defined in a statistical sense, the loading is termed a random dynamic loading; and its corresponding analysis of response is defined as a nondeterministic analysis. The principal emphasis in this course is placed on development of methods of deterministic dynamic analysis. 1.1 Introductionfundamental objective of structural dynamics analysis
