Statement of Purpose,by Xin Liang liangxinpku@gmail.com Statement of Purpose Motivation of Study I was asked the same question frequently:why you,a little girl, choose to study Electrical Engineering that seems to be a male work. But I never doubt about my choice because I know it suits me and is my affection. I was deeply affected by my grandfather, who is the president of an Electrical Engineering College in my hometown,Zhengzhou. He graduated from a famous university and was the classmate of former Chairman of China,Jiang Zemin. As one of the earliest Electrical Engineers in China,he made great contribution to Chinese industry.Inheriting from my grandfather,I played with watch, radio, electric model and computer that ignited my interests since I was a little girl. My interests truly blossomed after I entered University. The outstanding faculty and interdisciplinary approach to Electrical Engineering in Peking University inspired me to explore deeply and broadly in this field. On the other hand,IT industry grows at a rate of 20%~30%every year in China, which provides a great deal of researching and developing opportunities.I think probably I meet the best chance in history. Therefore,I am motivated to continue graduate study to refine my knowledge and skills in this filed. Academic Background Research Interests I have liked science and technology since I was young.Because of affection for physics and math in high school,I joined the Physics Olympiad 2002,and won the first prize in my province.Although most students considered it very difficult,I felt excited when I faced those challenging problems. I established a solid background on electrical engineering during my undergraduate study in Peking University. The breadth of syllabi content and the depth of curriculum gave me both strong conceptual understanding and precise comprehension to the core areas of Electrical Engineering. In addition, lots of experiments and projects in groups made my knowledge more practical.Because all my endeavours in four years,I graduated with major GPA 3.84/4.0 and ignited an interest in Signal Processing and Communication System, Because of my interest,I chose Satellite and Wireless Communication Lab of Peking University to start my graduate study, where I have showed fast learning ability and researching potential since the beginning.I not only got grade A in all professional courses, but also did some research work in Satellite and Wireless Communication Lab. Research Work Experience As a research assistant in Lab,I developed a digital equalizer for wideband satellite communication only within half a year, which is used in Chinese space project.I built a

Statement of Purpose,by Xin Liang liangxinpku@gmail.com model for non-linear distortion channel and designed an automatic adaptive equalizer based on that.During the project,I learned by myself and discussed with my colleagues, which improved my comprehension of communication conceptions.Beside theoretical knowledge, I also had some hands-on experience on electronic components. My thesis:Research and Realization of Digital Equalizer for Wideband Satellite Communications got high appreciation from my professor that sharpened my inclination to engage in further research of this area I have interned in Motorola as a software engineer for one year till February 2009 in Denmark.During the intern,I developed software for mobile device using C++and Java, mainly about applications in personal information management, battery control and user interface design.Although I had limited knowledge in this specific area at beginning,my fast learning ability impress my team leader and other colleagues.I adapted well to the international working environment,so besides learning professional skills,I had good experience in team cooperation.Working with foreign colleagues, having phone meetings with people from different countries, and writing some internal manuals also made me proficient in professional English. Personality I'm curious about unknown things,so innovation and creation make me excited.I like challenges. If I have a goal,I will pursue it constantly and never give up.To challenge myself,I joined ICM 2006 (Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling)with my friends. Although the topic:modeling for AIDS conditions is not related much to our major,we still found some similarities and attack points.Because of our innovation and contribution,we won Honorable Mention in the contest. Career Goal Professional Plans To improve the life of human is the goal of technology and is also the goal of my career Technology is meaningless unless it serves human and promotes the social progress.I dream to be a researcher in commercial,research-oriented,or academic institution, and develop some communication products or to change people's life all over the world.Hence I intend to pursue an MS degree to reach my career goal. Why Columbi诓 EE Department of Columbia University is one of the best schools of Electrical Engineering in the world.I was attracted mostly by the diversity of research interests, eminent faculty in my specialization, and intelligent students from all over the world.I feel the graduate study at your university will be a major step towards achieving my objectives. What I need best now is an opportunity.I know I have the ability, motivation and the determination to achieve success in the field of Electrical Engineering. 2
