Week 14th Outlining Writing the E-mail Dear Editor, Please find accompanying this letter a manuscript, which I am submitting for consideration of publication. Australia has recently experienced persistent record high temperature anomalies, with records broken on multiple times scales.Aspects of this persistent heat have been examined, and the unusual temperature extremes observed. In this manuscript,we examine the persistent extreme temperatures by using observational techniques. Using a combination of model and observational climate data,we find that the rate of hot Australian temperature record-breaking increase dramatically through the observed time series, while the number of new cold records set in the most recent decades decreases. This increased rate of hot record-breaking is consistent with climate models simulations that include anthropogenic forcings, such as greenhouse gases, but not simulations that only include natural climate forcings. We believe that these new results will be of interest to the readers. This simplified approach demonstrates the enhanced value of examining recent conditions collectively, rather than focusing solely on individual records as previous studies have.Examining the extremes of the recent period of persistent heat conjointly demonstrates that the recent rate of hot record-breaking dramatically exceeds that expected in a stationary climate.Hence, this study provides a globally relevant approach for understanding record-breaking temperatures at the regional-scale by using an example from Australia.
