team mobius From:Team Mobius Eric Viges,Jordan Marchese,Justin Rosario Brandon Teller,Lucas Hansen To: Ms.Amy Kao Engr100,Section 300 GSI Subject:Progress Report on plan to put solar panels on the roof of the IOE building Date:22 March 2007 Abstract In this document contains the project that Team Mobius has designed regarding placing solar panels on the Industrial Operations Engineering Building (IOE).It also contains the list of tasks that we have completed and tasks waiting to be completed. Introduction and Project Description Due to recent energy crises and pressure from organizations to look into renewable energy, our team felt that it was necessary to research a way to bring a green energy source to North Campus. Our plan is to design a 10 kilowatt solar array to be placed on the roof of the IOE Building. We plan on using United Solar Ovonics to supply the solar panels and help us with the Engineering and design of the array. We will choose the panels based off of the data that we will gather from colleges in Michigan. We will then choose which panel is the most efficient with regards to cost and how much energy it produces. To help pay for the massive costs of this project,we plan to apply for the 2008 Photovoltaic Grant worth fifty thousand dollars. If we get this grant,it should pay for up to 90%of the photovoltaic equipment of the project.Due to time constraints,we hope to lay down the foundation of the project so that another group in the future can be prepared to apply for the grant before its early April deadline. This project involves the following tasks: 1.Visit Oakland University and talk with Jim Leidel 2.Initiate contact with United Solar Ovonics 3.Meet with facilities manager from IOE Building 4.Contact representative from Dana Building and collect past solar array data 5.Collect information about MSU's transformers and inverters 6.Confirm interest in IOE solar array 7.Get pictures of IOE roof and collect other information on the roof 8.Analyze Dana building data to finalize panel supplier Team Mobius 1

Before we can change anything about the roof of the IOE building we must get permission from the Exterior Elements Design Review Committee. The EEDR must approve any alterations to the outside of University buildings. We must wait until EEDR has their monthly meeting in order to get approval for implementation of our project. Also,as previously stated we must get permission from the Board of Regents and the College of Engineering. Task Started:16 March 2007 Use MIRLYN to research and justify our project It is required for us to have five different articles from MIRLYN in our final report. Each team member will find at least one article on our topic.Ideally,we would like to have more than the required five. Task Started:16 March 2007 Find professors who are interested in using solar panels in the classroom This task is partially completed.Brandon Teller already met with Professor Daida to see if he was interested in using the solar panels in Engr100 or Engr101.He also supplies Brandon with the names of several other professors and faculty members who might be interested in using the solar panels for educational purposes. Task Started:16 March 2007 Design an arrangement for the array We cannot begin to Engineer the layout until we have pictures of the roof.Once we get those pictures,United Solar Ovonics can assist us in the design of the array. Task Started:16 March 2007 Write the Grant Originally we were going to apply for the 2007 Photovoltaic Grant. We had majority of the information needed to apply for the grant, however since the EEDR meets only once a month,we felt that it would be best to wait until next year due to time constraints.EEDR has the power to say that we cannot place the panels on the IOE Building. If they refused our idea for this month,we would have to change our design slightly and wait present it again at the end of April, well past the grant deadline in early April. Task Started:TBA Conclusion The project is going well, and it is expected to be completed on time. Team Mobius 4
