Unit Emotions and health Teaching aims: In this unit students are required to 1)get to know some useful information concerning the topic of the reading passages in this unit and to know more about english culture 2)do some preparation activities such as discussion, group work, etc. to practice their spoken skill and communicative skills; 3)grasp some new words and try to use these words which help them to enrich their vocabulary 4 read the in-class read ing passage in a limited time and grasp some expressions and grammatical points in the in-class reading passage to improve their read ing comprehension, 5)do some post-read ing exercises and some after-class reading to practice what they have got to know in class to improve their English comprehensive skills 6)translate some typical sentences into Chinese or English by using some expressions learned in the read ing passages to acquire some translating skills and better their translating abilities L. USeful Information Ever since the time of Sigmund Freud, the founder of modern psychiatry experts felt there was a strong relationship between emotions and health. Freud,a medical doctor, said that certain physical needs must be met to maintain mental health These include physical safety, food, and, especially, sexual gratification. Some think that Freud overemphasized sex. He also said that a poor emotional adjustment such as a repressed conflict can cause psychosomatic illnesses. These are illnesses with real physical symptoms but no physical cause IL Preparation 1. On the stage Directions: Work in groups to organice a mime production in which only body language and gestures are used to covey a particular emotion. For each performance, the other students are asked to guess the emotion expressed. One can express one s anger by pulling a long face getting red in the face being ready to attack clenching one's fist

Unit 7 Emotions and Health Teaching Aims: In this unit students are required to : 1) get to know some useful information concerning the topic of the reading passages in this unit and to know more about English culture; 2) do some preparation activities such as discussion, group work, etc. to practice their spoken skill and communicative skills; 3) grasp some new words and try to use these words which help them to enrich their vocabulary; 4)read the in-class reading passage in a limited time and grasp some expressions and grammatical points in the in-class reading passage to improve their reading comprehension; 5) do some post-reading exercises and some after-class reading to practice what they have got to know in class to improve their English comprehensive skills.; 6) translate some typical sentences into Chinese or English by using some expressions learned in the reading passages to acquire some translating skills and better their translating abilities. I. Useful Information Ever since the time of Sigmund Freud, the founder of modern psychiatry, experts felt there was a strong relationship between emotions and health. Freud, a medical doctor, said that certain physical needs must be met to maintain mental health. These include physical safety, food, and, especially, sexual gratification. Good health has come to mean more than simply the absence of ilIness. What else does good health mean? What determines health? Sample Good health has come to mean more than simply the absence of illness. Good health also means mental alertness and muscularity. One who has good health is intelligent, strong, energetic, quick-minded, and full of vigor There are many factors contributing to good health. First of all, one shouldnt smoke and shouldnt drink excessively. Secondly, one should have a healthy diet and avoid eating and drinking too much at one time. One should eat breakfast every day and eat very little between meals. Thirdly, exercise is extremely important for good health. If one takes exercise regularly, good health won't be too far away. Fourthly enough sleep is also very important. One should sleep seven to eight hours a day Lack of sleep will dull one's mind and one's body will eventually give out. Finally one should get regular med ical care. Regular check-ups are necessary IV Passage reading

Language points 1)It is not just stress that can do damage. These d ifficulties bear down on us with the weight of mount Tai. The stress is harmful to students health. We must manage it. Here is how You can speak out or write down your stress. When you are depressed, you can tell one of your intimate friends all your troubles. Then he or she will give you a few words of comfort. You will feel better after that. Also you can write down all your troubles and read them and again. When you are bored with them, you will worry less about them If you dont like speaking or writing, you can go out with your friends. You can go camping, fishing, swimming, skating and things like that. But you must throw yourself into it. Then you will be happy and forget all your stress. You may be tired after that, and you will sleep like a log till broad daylight. The next day, everything will be all right Remember that stress is dangerous to your health, but you can manage it. Why not start now? Sample 2 There are all kinds of stress in our daily lives such as stress from work, stress from study and stress from examinations. How to manage stress is thus a very important problem that we have to deal with properly I think stress itself doesnt exist. It's only because we consider things to be bad and regard all of them as our own fault and won't forgive ourselves As we all know, there is nothing you can do without error. So it's impossible to expect everything to be perfect. If we have done our best, although not successfully, there is nothing to regret And we dont to blame ourselves continuously. In fact we have done a quite good job. Then we will feel the stress less. We will stay healthy and do well in the future Eventually we will be successful
