How RFID Changes the World Abstract RFID,short for radio-frequency identification,is the use of a wireless non-contact system that uses radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data from a tag attached to an object, for the purposes of automatic identification and tracking. Some tags require no battery and are powered by the electromagnetic fields used to read them.Others use a local power source and emit radio waves. The tag contains electronically stored information which can be read from up to several meters away.Unlike a bar code, the tag does not need to be within line of sight of the reader and may be embedded in the tracked object. This report mainly consists of two parts.Part One introduces the application of RFID at the present time.Part Two introduces how RFID makes a difference in "Internet of Things"and how it is going to change the way we live. 1.How RFID Has Changed Our World Companies start experimenting with RFID applications mainly for two reasons One is the mandate by some major channel masters and procurement agencies. The other is the immediate benefits that can be gained from implementing the technology. Even though RFID brings many benefits such as preventing counterfeiting and theft, companies still face many problems in using it on a large scale. One major problem is that tagging every single product is a huge cost so at present only high-value items such as cars and ink cartridges are tagged with RFID.Besides it still has many problems to solve technically. There are many aspects in which RFID has been put into use at present. Here are some typical and most ordinary examples. a.Package Tracking. b.Product Tracking. c.Store. d.Manufacturing e. Warehouse Management. f.Product Launch. When it comes to demand forecasting,RFID has a big advantage over POS.In old days the data commonly used by retailers and their suppliers to forecast demand were

How RFID Has Changed Our World Companies start experimenting with RFID applications mainly for two reasons. One is the mandate by some major channel masters and procurement agencies. The other is the immediate benefits that can be gained from implementing the technology. Even though RFID brings many benefits such as preventing counterfeiting and theft, companies still face many problems in using it on a large scale. Besides it still has many problems to solve technically. There are many aspects in which RFID has been put into use at present. Here are some typical and most ordinary examples. a. Package Tracking. b. Product Tracking. c. Store. d. Manufacturing. e. Warehouse Management. f. Product Launch. When it comes to demand forecasting, RFID has a big advantage over POS. In old days the data commonly used by retailers and their suppliers to forecast demand were
point-of-sale (POS)data.POS data, taken from cash registers, measures what is actually sold.Unfortunately,POS data doesn't measure real demand because of lost sales due to out-of-stock items. However, with RFID in use, lost sales can be quantified for the first time. Thus demand forecasting gets much more precise and supply chain can be managed much better. RFID improves supply chain efficiency greatly.Retailers are expected to be the main beneficiaries of RFID.They expect benefits in three primary areas: a.Reduced inventory. b.Store and warehouse labor reduction c.Reduction in out-of-stock. Manufacturers also benefit from RFID in the following three aspects: a.Inventory visibility b.Labor efficiency. c.Improved fulfillment. All in all,RFID is a revolutionary technology that will significantly impact the way supply chains are managed and lead to greater efficiency.RFID tags will not merely replace bar codes but will allow real-time tracking of products,or at least cases and pallets. In particular,it will enable a large reduction of lost sales that is very costly for companies. However, achieving these efficiencies will require new information systems that can take advantage of the real-time and detailed product location information provided by the RFID technology 2.How RFID Will Change Our World Since RFID is so effective in tagging and tracking an item,it is sure to make a big difference in many aspects in the future. But in this report we will focus on one aspect,"Internet of Things(IOT)". The Internet of Things refers to uniquely identifiable objects(things)and their virtual representations in an Internet-like structure. The term Internet of Things was first used by Kevin Ashton in 1999.The concept of the Internet of Things first became popular through the Auto-ID Center and related market analysts publications. IOT is highly dependent on RFID because the foundation of IOT is that every single object in the system gets the ability to be recognized and exchange information. To make things recognizable,RFID is the best technology available at present. IOT is already changing the way we live.It has been put into practice in some aspects. For instance, the defending system of Shanghai Pudong International Airport

takes good advantage of IOT.In this system there are over 30,000 sensors spreading from in the air to over the ground. This intelligent system can deal with any illegal crossing or terrorist attack quickly and precisely. However,IOT is still at its starting stage. There are many areas in which IOT can make a big difference.I have come with some ideas and listed them as follows. a.Intelligent Transport System(ITS). In ITS,large quantities of sensors are spread all over the city, watching traffic conditions on every road. With all the information sent back to a central control system, the system is able to determine the changing of traffic lights all through the city. This system has a big advantage over traditional ones.It collects all the information;thus it can achieve the best efficiency for the entire city, rather than just one street.Furthermore, with the development of automatic driving, the control system can even determine how each car runs.At that time there would be no traffic lights and no drivers.A driving license would become history. The whole city traffic would function properly and fast automatically, cutting the time spent on roads to its minimum. b.Intelligent Home. Every single object at home is tagged using RFID and a central computer knows the information of everything.People no longer need to worry that something can't be found.Besides,a lot of daily work is done automatically. For example, every egg in the fridge is tagged and the computer knows the exact quantity of them.Once the eggs are fewer than needed, the computer places an order though the Internet automatically and soon the eggs are delivered. This technology saves people from annoying daily housework and makes our life much better. c.United Planet. This idea might sound ridiculous but it is indeed possible.Imagine each of our daily useful things is equipped with a chip. The chip sends information to and receives orders from a giant central system.Communication between chips is also allowed. So our planet functions just like a creature. The central system is the brain and all the others are cells. There will be much fewer conflicts than ever before in every field because the central system arranges everything properly. And we,the human race, will live an easier life than we could ever imagine.Industry and nature exist in harmony. The human civilization goes on at its best pace. That would be a really wonderful world!
