Course Work: Biometric Security This is a group project(two students/each group). There are two stages for this assignment The objectives of this assignment are to enable students with principles and knowledge of biometrics technology and their applications Project stage I is a more technical one which requires the students to study a particular biometric technology in-depth, and give their own comments from the paper read On the other hand, project assignment 2 is more practical and closed to the real world situation, which require the students to promote a particular biometric(the same one with assignment 1)to the business world Students should get more familiar with biometrics technology, its strength and weaknesses, carry out different analysis and feasibility stud ies, and know how to promote it. It is very important and useful training for a student to promote an idea in a more concrete and practical way Each group should choose a following specif ic biometric technology. (Please note that both stage I and 2 are working on the same biometric) List of biometric technologies 1. Footprint 2. Nailbed 3. Dental 4. Lip print 5 6. DNA 7. Keystroke 8. Gesture 9. Vein 10. Thermogram Page 1 of 5

Project assignment: Stage 2 A total biometric* solution to business applications Description Biometrics is becoming more important nowadays, but still not many applications using biometrics due to different reasons such as 1) People do not know much about biometrics; 2) People think biometrics is expensive 3)People think biometrics is not reliable 4)User acceptability is not high 5)Privacy issue, etc After you have stud ied this course, you should know more about biometrics, and can act as an expert to tell the public on the above issues Now, assume you are a particular biometric- vendor, you are required to select a particular business application which could be benefit ing from your product, and increasing their management efficiency, lowering their cost, etc Your group is required to perform a series of study, including(but not limited to) I. Background study r biometric feature is the best suitable one for that particular business application, you should know clear what is the strength and weaknesses of this biometric. Further, you should also know clear why others biometric are not as appropriate as your stated one. This involves the in-depth study and analysis of the characteristics of different biometrics technologies and he background of that particular business application 2. Feasibility studies You need to perform feasibil ity stud ies for implementing this particular biometric to the selected business application includ ing financial feasibility and technical feasibil ity stud ies. The financial feasibil ity study could show the implementation of this biometric could help the company to cut cost, increase the management effectiveness, etc. The technical feasibility study could show the biometric is extremely suitable for this type of business, etc. This involves the background understanding of the biometric technology and the analysis of the needs of a Page 3 of 5

Now, assume you are a particular biometric* vendor, you are required to select a particular business application which could be benefiting from your product, and increasing their management efficiency, lowering their cost, etc. Your group is required to perform a series of study, including (but not limited to): 1. Background study Before you are telling your biometric feature is the best suitable one for that particular business application, you should know clear what is the strength and weaknesses of this biometric. Further, you should also know clear why others biometric are not as appropriate as your stated one. This involves the in-depth study and analysis of the characteristics of different biometrics technologies and the background of that particular business application. 2. Feasibility studies You need to perform feasibility studies for implementing this particular biometric to the selected business application including financial feasibility and technical feasibility studies. The financial feasibility study could show the implementation of this biometric could help the company to cut cost, increase the management effectiveness, etc. The technical feasibility study could show the biometric is extremely suitable for this type of business, etc. This involves the background understanding of the biometric technology and the analysis of the needs of a
company. You may need to do some surveys to know the needs of the business application, and check whether the selected biometric could help their business The survey may include questionnaire design, interviewing users, technical reading, joumal papers read ing, etc. Y al applications using the same biometric you are promoting to show the popularity and confidence of your biometric technology 3. Implementation You may use any programming language/tools to write a demo system to show the advantages of using your selected biometric on the target business application You are not required to write the front end of the biometric identification/verification part, but just assume that some users are using your system regularly. Since this is not a programming course, there is no need to write too complicated software. However, you should try your best effort, to use appropriate programming language/tools (i.e. MsAccess) to write the ba management software to show the advantages of you biometric solution. For example, if you are implementing a fingerprint system for the "Employee management system', then the demo system should how effective the management can manage the employee such as their time-in/time-out, late or absent from work. You can also add the automatic salary calculation subsystem to show the full advantages of the system 4. User acceptance and privacy These issues are the most concerned part from users' point of view(here users are the real users who use the biometric system, but not the management team). You need to think about how to let the users more comfortable to use you system and accept the system(i.e. think about the installation of fingerprint system can let the user no need to bring smart card/key in ID, etc). Also, you can design some materials including seminars, training course, etc to the users so that they know more biometric, and more willing to use the system 5. A total solution After complete the above 4 components(or more), you can form a total solution for using biometric in a real world applications In summary, you are required to persuade a business organization to use your biometric product. You should show why is it good for using biometric technology and why your stated biometric (ie. fingerprint) is good for their business nature Page 4 of 5

The survey may include questionnaire design, interviewing users, technical reports reading, journal papers reading, etc. You can also list some typical applications using the same biometric you are promoting to show the popularity and confidence of your biometric technology. 3.
