《目标》这本书谈的是科学与教育。我相信一直以来，这两个名词都被过度滥用，被拱上了崇高的地位和神秘的迷雾中，以至于尽失原意。对我和许多受人尊敬的科学家而言，科学谈的不是大自然的奥秘，或甚至真理，科学只不过是我们用来尝试推敲出基本假设的方式，透过直截了当的逻辑推演，这些假设能解释许多自然现象为何存在。物理学的能量守恒定律不是真理，只不过是能用来解释许多自然现象的假设。我们永远无法证明这样的假设，因为即使我们能用这个假设来解释无数自然现象，我们还是无法证明它是放诸四海皆准的。另一方面，只要有一个现象是这个定律所无法解释的，这个假设就立刻被推翻了。推翻这个假设丝毫无损于假设的效力，而只不过是凸显了另外还有一个更有效力的假设存在，或是我们需要去找到其他假设。能量守恒定律所讲到的状况正是如此，关于能量与质量的守恒，爱因斯坦推论出一个更放诸四海皆准、更有效力的假设，取代了原本的定律。但是，这并不代表爱因斯坦的假设就是真理，正如过去的能量守恒定律也不是真理一样
