Interpreting is an integrative multi-task linguistic practice in combination with skills of
listening, speaking, reading, writing and interpreting. It is an impromptu action involves an interpreter’s bilingual capacity, extra knowledge, interpreting skills and techniques and psychological qualities. Interpreting course aims at cultivating applied talents which is suitable for English majors in their third or fourth year who have a fairly good command of Chinese and English. Focusing on skills and techniques training, the course will help the students improve the skills and techniques required of professional interpreters. Students will also be given a grounding in the theory underlying the principles and practice of interpreting. The course will provide students abundant practical materials in various forms, subjects and contents. The difficulty lies in the culture difference, the different expressions between Chinese and English, students’ ability in switching between the two languages, and their integrative capacity in language skills. By the end of the course students will have learned basic skills of getting the message through listening, logical analysis, improving memory efficiency, professional interpreter’s notes system, coping tactics incomprehension, public speaking(vocal rendering and body language) and problem areas in interpreting figures.
