The course mainly involves three aspects: learning strategies for listening comprehension and oral expression, knowledge of language and related social and cultural fields, and competence in language use and reasoning. Highlighting the pertinence of learning stages, hierarchy of difficulty levels and overall systematicness, the course attempts to combine language learning with knowledge teaching, with focuses on cultivating students’ political identity, cultural literacy and moral values. Closely related to students’ learning activities and social life, the course covers a wide range of topics with rich materials arranged in accordance with their difficulty levels. The topics of each unit cover various aspects of society, including environmental protection, medical health, crisis management, marriage and family, gender equality, Internet security, and so on. Besides, the training of listening and speaking skills related to English

proficiency tests such as TEM4 and IELTS will be highlighted. The selected language materials are in a variety of forms, including situational dialogues, academic lectures, speeches and debates, news reports, film clips and authentic tests.
