The aim of the course is to inspire students to think over contemporary cultural and literary life, and strengthen their interest in further reading in English literary works. Meanwhile, the course is designed to broaden students’ horizon in study, enrich their reading contents and propensity, deepen their appreciation of English writings, nurture their reading interest and basic reading habits, and develop their ability of critical thinking through reading and analyzing large quantity of reading materials in English. As most reading materials in the course are taken from classical literary and historical texts, students are supposed to be able to appreciate the beauty of English humane world, improve their capability in the application of English language skills, and enhance their critical sense about culture and cultural confidence through critical reading.
