In the autumn semester of 2023, they will carefully study J. S. Mill’s On Liberty under the guidance of the teacher, learning its main themes, central ideas, as well as argumentations on the one hand, and strengthening the skills of reading, writing as well as speaking English by means of presentation and interpretation on the other. The reading material selected for this course, which is of great value to both scholars on practical theories and observers of social reality, covered many significant issues still fiercely debated in contemporary moral and political philosophy. Furthermore, as a masterpiece in the history English literature, On Liberty sheds light on how to write an academic essay both neatly weaved and elegantly articulated. It is a special task for the students to get accustomed to reading the 19 th English, especially understanding its peculiar grammars and old expressions. Any participant of this course must give one presentation in English about a thesis which interests him/her most and is selected from the chapter under discussion. After this presentation, all students will take turns rendering freely Mill’s text paragraph by paragraph. *教材 (Textbooks) (1) Mill, J.
