It uses the same textbook but contains completely different material. This course looks at how European Culture started 2000 years ago and all the developments and changes that have made it what it is today. Starting in Ancient Greece and Rome, it follows the progress of art, music, and literature until arriving at the influences of science and philosophy in the 19th Century, finishing with early cinema and pop music of the 1950s-70s. The first three weeks of the course are a brief political and social history of Europe, but afterwards looks at artistic movements in the times when they were created. It will be helpful for students to have an interest in history or an enjoyment of arts and culture. Classes will be in English, although any important vocabulary will be given a Chinese translation. Grades will be earned through attendance, presentations (each student will give one short presentation), and an exam. Notes will be provided for each lecture in PDF form.
