If the argument is cogent, then we have reasor to be rational theists, i.e, to maintain that there are justifying reasons for belief in God s existence. Today we're going to consider an argument for atheism which purports to show that theism is incoherent, i.e., that theism entails a contradiction. If the argument works, then the only option available to the theist would be irrational theism: belief in Gods existence in spite of justifying reasons supporting atheism L Contradictions Not having a good argument in support of something you believe is uncomfortable, but we live with this condition all the time. Sometimes our beliefs are a matter of wishful thinking; when there is no compelling evidence one way or the other, we just make the best guess we can. What is more difficult to live with is having a convincing argument against your belief, for this commits you to a contradiction What is a contradiction and why is it more problematic than just believing without conclusive evidence? a set of beliefs is contradictory if and only if it is not possible for all of them to be true together, that is, if at least one of them must be false Consider a simple example a)All birds can fly b) Penguins are bird c) Penguins can't fly Not all of (a-c)can be true together(one must be false). To recognize this and still believe all three(say, on faith )would not just be a matter of believing something without reason (like believing without evidence that your parents will send you more money at the end of the month); if you persist in believing all of (a-c) you can be sure thatthat you are accepting at least one falsehood. It's similar to maintaining both that today is Wednesday and that it is not the case that today is Wednesday. Not both of those can be true: to believe both is to believe something impossible is the case. That would be irrational IL. Omnipotence can 't mean the ability to do even what is strictly impossible. God can turn Lotis wife into a pillar of salt, maybe, but he canit both turn her into a pillar of salt and at the same time not do so. And surely this implies no limitation on his powers that God is omnipotent, we weren't saying that God could do what logically impossible

To get clear on this we have to distinguish two quite different ways we have of describing things we have to distinguish comparative descriptions from non-comparative Examples of comparative descriptions are words like"small"/"large","easy"/difficult", " empty",crowded. "These are called"comparative" because to be small is to be smaller than most other things. So as a rough test we might say BLAH is a comparative description if only if to be BlaH is to be more blaH than the competition a description is non-comparative if it's not comparative. Examples of non-comparative descriptions are words like chipmunk" or"square. Something is a chipmunk not because it is chipmunkier than other things, but because of what it is like in itself Now, what sorts of descriptions are"good"and"evil"? It might appear that they are comparative. Then it would seem to follow that there canit be a world in which everything was good--no more than there can be one in which everything was sma Have we blocked Mackie's argument then? Premise(2)now looks false. An OoG God would not bring about a world that was wholly good, because given the relativity of goodness such a world is impossible. The trouble is that the idea that good things are things that are better than most other things is not plausible. Most of us think that, say, honesty, is good But do we think that honesty would become bad if still higher goods, say charity, became prevalent? Or consider: I do something"bad, "e.g, steal something from my brother. But all is not lost on the view we're considering, for by arranging for a lot of still worse things too happen, I can make it"good"! Would causing pain turn good if everyone else was causing more pain? It doesn,t seem so It is plausible that often we do use"good"and"bad"comparatively. But all the objection needs is that there is a sense or context in which"good"and"bad"are non-comparative. Compare grading on a curve to grading by a uniform standard Doesn,'t it make sense when someone gets a 100% on an exam that the exam answers were good and not just better than the rest of the class?(After all, it is possible on a uniform standard for everyone to get an A, i.e., for everyone to do a good job. )If good"and"evil "can be used non-comparatively, then it isn't true that good logically requires evil Re iii: Even if one maintains that good/bad are comparative notions, in order for there to be a basis for comparison, the world would only need to contain a small amount of evil the good things are all better than that! But this world clearly contains more than the alleged logically necessary amount of evil B. Evil is necessary as a means to good C. Evil is a necessary precondition of certain goods Or as Mackie puts it, "the world is better with some evil in it than it could be if there were no evil. "The idea is that if there cre certain very special and important goods that depended on the existence of evil, then in order for God to create the best world, there must be some evil. (Note: there could be good without evil, but not best without evil.) So the idea is that certain goods presuppose or demand the existence of evil. Which ones? Pleasure, excitement, satisfaction: these things don' t presuppose evil. But then, these things, while very nice, don 't seem like the best we as much more important goods than mere animal pleasure. So naturally God will put a little pain and misery n t wano toce humans are capable of. Sympathy, charity, heroism, kindness, all seem to depend for their very possibility on the existe of evil. There can be no sympathy if no one is suffering, or heroism is there is no danger. Yet sympathy, heroism, etcare as to create the possibility of these higher goods. By doing this he makes the world better overall than it would be if he left them out

So, the view is that God creates first-order evil only to set the stage for a second-order good which more than offsets it; we might say that first-order evil is redeemed by the second-order good that it makes possible. So, deprivation is redeemed by the kindness it makes possible. Of course, this leaves it unexplained why there is also second order evil, e. g, mockery &nbs p &nb sp; evils 3rd order forgiveness/piety &nbs p 2nd order mockery/cruelty I st orde &n bsp; laughter/pleasure &nb sp; deprivation/starvation/pain Can you see how the theist is going to answer? He can try to run the same argument at a higher level this second order evil is only there in the service of some third order good which more than offsets it Overall the picture is that there are different orders of good and evil. First order good is happiness, pleasure, and the like; first order evil is pain, misery, and so on Second order good is good that presupposes first order evil; and second order evil is evil that presupposes first order good. Likewise, third order good presupposes second order evil, etc. So, hunger might be a first order evil and laughing a first order good charity a second order good and mockery a second order evil cynicism a third order evil and forgiveness a third order good; and so on. And in general nth order evil exists only to make possible an(n+ l)st order good that offsets it and makes the world overall better But this sets up the final point: how can it be maintained that the world contains just that amount of nth order evil requisite for the corresponding(n+ 1)st order good? In fact this is almost never the case. Sad but true, people grown old and die desperate and broken-hearted without anyone showing them the kindness that might conceivability redeem their pain. All in all, it appears that there is far more nth order evil than could be justified in terms of higher order goods D. Evil is due not to God but to human free will. This is probably the most important response to the problem of evil, and it is connected to(C). The question arises, why did god grant us free will if so much misery results? And the answer must be that it is better on the whole that people should act freely even granted the disastrous use we sometimes make of our freedom. Free will is a higher good that more than makes up for whatever trouble it causes Problen 1) Lots of evils arent related to free will at all: earthquakes, floods, etc. Why do these exist if God is good? (Punishment Instruction? But what about the death of innocents? ii)Why couldnt God have given us such excellent characters that we would freely choose good in every case? Perhaps, we would al ways have the option of doing evil, but we would al ways prefer the other option. As Mackie puts it: God was not faced with the choice of making either automata or free agents who sometimes go wrong. She could also have made free agents that always go right! (Analogy: most of us choose to stay on the sidewalk rather than to dart out into traffic, this is predictable but it doesnit mean we arenit free The fact that I have the character I do is not a barrier to my freedom, even if I didnit choose my character. But then why didnit god make us all with wonderful good characters? Is Mother Theresa unfree? Why couldn,'t we all be like her? iii) Free will seems incompatible with Godis omnipotence. The reason is that when God gives me free will, she commits herself to letting my actions depend on my decisions rather than hers. So, if I decide to steal a car, or burn a flag, because of her commitment God cannot stop me! And if God cannot stop me, then that would seem to imply a limitation on her powers
