Unit 1 Announcements I. Teaching Aims 1. Improve the student’s speaking ability related to making announcements; 2. Train the students’ listening ability to understand the main idea and grasp important details of a passage; 3. Master the useful words and expressions in this unit. II. Teaching Points 1. Ss are required to understand the announcements in Micro-listening and Macro-listening. 2. Train the students’ speaking abilities in making announcements, retelling and discussion. 3. Useful expressions and words: crew, leaflet, prohibit, mobile, duty-free, vegetarian, be bound for, court, arena, pottery, admission, resort III. Teaching Methods 1. Teaching procedures Step one Introduction Sometimes we should make an announcement to an audience about an upcoming event or activity that may be of interest to them; and at times we often hear announcements at the airports, stations or some other places. Today we’ll listen to some announcements and learn to make our own announcements. Step Two Micro-listening 1. Play the tape recorder for the students. 2. Check the answers. 3. Emphasize some language points and sentence structures: be ready for boarding, proceed, non-stop, departure, depart, a change of platforms/time Step Three Macro-listening 1. Explain the new words and expressions (1) crew n. all the staff operating a plane, ship, train, etc. (2) leaflet n. sheets of printed matter giving information (3) prohibit v. to ban, not allow (4) mobile: a. able to move, not fixed in one place (5) duty-free a. not requiring payment of taxes (6) vegetarian n. one whose diet mainly consists of grains, vegetables, fruits and no meat (7) be bound for: to head for, to leave for (8) court n. open ground marked with appropriate lines for ball games such as tennis, basketball, etc

Explain the sentenc structures of making announcements and ask the students to dothe Exercise on P11. 2.Give them the following topics to discuss and then ask some students to give personal presentation. Explain the sentence structures of making announcements and ask the students to do the Exercise on P11. 2. Give them the following topics to discuss and then ask some students to give personal presentation. (1) A Typical Day in winter Vacation (2) An Unforgettable Thing in winter Vacation (3) Activities to Celebrate the Spring Festival Step Five Homework 1. Listen to the second announcement and try to retell it. 2. Ask the students to finish the “Home Listening” after class. VI.
