AXIAL TENSIONAND COMPRESSION 81-1 CONCEPTS AND PRACTICAL EXAMPLES OF AXIAL TENSION AND COMPRESSION l、 Concepts Characteristic of the external force: The acting line of the resultant of external forces is coincided with the axis of the rod Characteristic of the deformation: Deformation of the rod is mainly elongation or contraction along the axis of the rod and companied with lateral reduction or enlargement Axial tension Deformation of the rod is axial elongation and lateral shortening. Axial compression: Deformation of the rod is axial shortening and lateral enlargement
