Listening and speaking activities 1. Listen to the recording of the text and fill in the blanks about the main ideas of the article 2. Talk about different grades of thinking and discuss the questions on the text IlL. Reading Comprehension and language activities 1. Pre-reading discussions: 1)Do you know the French sculptor and his famous works the Kiss and the Thinker? 2)What do you think of thinking? 2. Background knowledge The author has concluded that there were three grades of thinking. The subject of thinking was first brought up to him by his headmaster, in whose study he was shown the statuettes of Venus, leopard and the Thinker, which stands for love, nature and pure thought respectively 3.Text analysis: Part 1(paragraphs 1-8): The author describes his encounter with a student of his who considered it useless for a pharmacy major to read great writers Part2(paragraphs 9-14): The author, fourteen years later, still emphasizes that the purpose of a university is to put its students in touch with the best civilization in human history 4.
