MODULE INTRODUCTION Lecture: Full English lecture but students can raise and explain their questions in Chinese. Contents: In-class discussions, debates and arguments

ASSESSMENT Assessment:3,000 word essay(footnotes required and included).Please choose one of the following topics or the "questions to think about".Students are allowed to develop any preferred topic by themselves but s/he has to acquire the Module Convener's approval. 1.Please compare and contrast the Taiping rebel's strategies and tactics to the 1 and 2nd counterattack the Jiangnan Stronghold of the Qing troops. 2.Please analyse the advantages and disavatages of the Huai Army's conqueror in Shangdong and the Chu Army's one in the Northewest. 3.To what extent do you agree or disagree with China's maritime strategies under Li Hongzhang's direction? 4. Please describe the interrelations between the battlefields of Japanese and Chinese navies and armyies during the First Sino-Japanese War. Please analyse the backgrounds of the Huai Army generals and New Army generals. 6.Please comment the ideas of'Chaotic Republic versus Stable Monarchy'. 7.Please analyse the reason why after Yuan's death the relations between the President and Premier became more conflictive. 8.Please compare and contrast Li Yuanhong's,Feng Guozhang's and Xu Shichang's policies towards the South. 9.Please comment the technocrats'contributions during the Cao Kun reign. 10.Please analyse the reason why the Provisional Executive Government of China could convene the Tariff Autonomy Conference even it was not a internationally recognised legitimacy. 11.Why did the Feng-tien Warlord Zhang Zuolin was not interested in the presidency?

PLAGIARISM (II) Acts of plagiarism turning in someone else's work as your own; copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit; failing to put a quotation in quotation marks; giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation; changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit;and copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not(see our section on "fair use"rules) MOST CASES OF PLAGIARISM CAN BE AVOIDED BY CITING SOURCES!!! Simply acknowledging that certain material has been borrowed and providing your audience with the information necessary to find that source is usually enough to prevent plagiarism.See our section on citation for more information on how to cite sources properly

Plagiarism is not always a black and white issue. Learning to recognise the various forms of plagiarism,especially the more ambiguous ones,is an important step towards effective prevention
