Unit One:This Year It's Going to Be Different Teaching objectives: To make students understand what a narrative is and how a narrative is organized according to a time sequence. To help students master the general techniques of narrative writing: To help students develop a general awareness of different styles of different writers and understand the rhetorical devices (such as exaggeration and irony) emploved in the text ◆ To acquaint the students with basic knowledge of register: colloquial expressions(colloquialism)in conversation and formal expressions found in the writer's lists of resolutions on self-improvement; To supply students with opportunities to practice their basic language skills. Time allocation and Teaching procedure: About 4 sessions(8 class hours)are needed for this unit. 1st session 1.Pre-reading questions: Test students on the background reading materials and see if they have a general idea of a narrative;ask students to explain the title of Text I:This Year It's Going to Be Different. Clarify the meanings of the word"narrative",and introduce what a narrative is. 2.Study of Text I: Analyzing the structure of the text:involving the students in summing up the techniques of narrative writing.
