1 Unit Ten: Keep Class Two Under Your Thumb Teaching objectives: ⚫ To help students master some phrases with “thumb”. ⚫ To make students understand what a narrative is and how the writer describes the story. ⚫ To help students master the general techniques of narrative writing. ⚫ To acquaint the students with some basic knowledge of rhetorical devices: exaggeration, simile, metaphor. ⚫ To supply students with opportunities to practice their basic language skills. Time Allocation and Teaching Procedure: About 4 sessions (8 class hours) are needed for this unit. 1 st session 1. Pre-reading questions: Test students on the background reading materials and see if they have a general idea of Text I. Ask students to explain the phrase “keep somebody under one’s thumb”. Study of Text I: Analyzing the text: involving the students in the writer’s effective use of comic exaggeration, simile and metaphor, and in his excellent description of a situation totally out of control.
