The first public showing of a motion picture – on May 22, 1891, at Thomas Edison's workshop in New Jersey – consisted of a polite man who bowed to the audience, smiled and took off his hat. Then in 1896, three films were shown at a music hall in New York City. Each film was only about 30 – 90 seconds long; the quality was poor, and the images were jumpy, but these early moving pictures were a great success. They soon led to the creation of longer films (of about 10 minutes each). These films, for the first time, told a story, and the motion picture industry was born. The First Movie Illusions Since its birth, the movie industry has been filled with illusions – i. e., things that seem to be real but actually aren't. The early movie makers and their audiences were as fascinated by the creation of illusions as film viewers today. Although the methods used then were very simple, the viewers accepted the images on the screen and believed them. There was no sound at the time. (The first "talking" motion picture didn't appear until 1927.) But even so, women in the audience of The Great Train Robbery put their fingers in their ears to shut out the "noise" of the guns. The imagination of the viewers, added to the pictures on the screen, made the illusion seem real. Film Lighting The reason why the American film industry moved to southern California early in the twentieth century was simple: the good weather. In the East, it rained, snowed, or was cloudy for several months every year, but in the West it was sunny year-round. "Inside" scenes were filmed outdoors in "rooms" with only two or three walls, so that the sun could light the scene. Unfortunately, this illusion was a poor one; the light looked exactly like what it was – sunlight –and not like the light inside a building. Nevertheless, when powerful lights came into existence and indoor scenes were actually shot inside, not all problems were solved. 1 2 题号 一 二 三 四 五 六 七 八 九 十 总分 分数 阅卷人 下 装 订 线 专业班级: 姓名: 学号: 上 装 订 线

西安建筑科技大学考试试卷 On the one hand, good weather was no longer essential, and movie makers could decide how to use the lighting in a scene. On the other hand, the heat of the huge lights made actors very uncomfortable. Among other problems, it caused ice cream to melt very quickly. Thus film producers began looking for new solutions to create illusion. In this case, mashed potatoes, which didn't turn to liquid, were used instead of ice cream. The Appearance of Blood One of the most common illusions throughout the history of film has been the use of "blood." Because of the popularity of murder mysteries, war stories, horror movies, and westerns, there has always been an enormous amount of blood on the screen. Movie producers were challenged by two problems: what to use and how to use it. When movies were filmed in black and white, it was possible to use chocolate syrup as a substitute for real blood. These days, in color films, "blood" is a combination of syrup, food dye red, and food dye yellow. "How?" In old westerns, when the "bad guy" had been shot by the "good guy," he used to hit the place where he had been shot, say, "You got me," and drop to the ground. Though not very realistic, it was essential for the actor to hit himself in this way because "blood" was hidden in a small packet under the shirt. When he did this, the packet would break, and blood would come out through his fingers. These days, however, "bleeding" is a matter of technology. Sometimes, as in The Godfather, a performer may be shot over a hundred times! In such cases, the many packets hidden on the victim's body are attached to thin wires, which, in turn, are connected to a computer. The computer causes each packet to explode at exactly the right moment. Substitutions Movie illusions include a wide variety of substitutions. Instead of letting actors or actresses fall off a building, producers use dummies (large dolls). Stunt people usually take the place of movie stars for the action of dangerous scenes. Instead of paying thousands of people to appear in a scene, movie makers have often made use of miniature figures to create the illusion of a huge crowd. Once during the filming, tea leaves in clear water even substituted for mosquitoes when the little insects couldn't be persuaded to perform. Some of the most creative substitutions can be found in sets from war movies. In one early film, miniature ships were put into inch-deep water. Smoke was essential to the scene, so the artist's wife offered to smoke a cigarette, and an office boy added a cigar. Special Effects Today, of course, such simple methods of creating special effects would not be accepted by audiences who are used to seeing very believable action. Nowadays, especially in science-fiction films, very realistic-looking scenes are made possible by modern technology. Spaceships zoom through the universe, supernovas explode, and human (as well as not-so-human) astronauts fight each other for power and wealth. Viewers who are fascinated by this "movie magic" often ask how it is produced. Most of the illusions in these scenes combine the real (live performers) with the imagined (e. g., miniatures and painted scenes ). The actors and actresses are often filmed separately from a picture of a spaceship: then a view of the stars and planets is shot. After that, miniature figures of creatures from outer space might be filmed, and so on. Afterwards, these separate elements are all combined on the same piece of film. In one "simple" 5- to 10-second piece of action, as many as eighteen different elements might be required. In addition, computers make possible new kinds of movements. The use of technology has led many viewers to believe that special effects – not live performers – are the true modern "movie stars." 注意:此部分试题请在答题卡 1 上作答;8-10 题在答题卡 1 上。 1. 西安建筑科技大学考试试卷 Questions 47 to 56 are based on the following passage. I see four kinds of pressure working on college students today: economic pressure, parental pressure, peer pressure, and self-induced pressure. It’s easy to look around for bad guys— to 47 the colleges for charging too much money, the professors for 48 too much homework, the parents for 49 their children too far, the students for driving themselves too hard. But there are no bad guys, only 50 . Today it is not unusual for a student, even one who works part time at college and full time during the summer, to have 51 $5,000 in loans after four years—loans that the student must start to 52 within one year after graduation (and incidentally, not all these loans are low interest, as many non-students believe). Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. Let us begin by saying what does not cause our dreams. Our dreams do not come from "another world". They are not messages from some outside source. They are not a look into the future, either. All our dreams have something to do with our emotions, fears, longings, wishes, needs and memories. But something on the "outside" may affect what we dream. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold, his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket, have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping or resting on the ice and snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experiences you have today. So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has influence on you while you are sleeping (feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc.) and it may also use your past experience and the wishes and interests you have now. This is why very young children are likely to dream of fairies, older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, homesick soldiers of their families, and prisoners of freedom. To show you how that is taking place while you are asleep and how your wishes or needs can all be joined together in a dream, here is the story of an experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbent cotton (脱脂棉). He would dream that he was in a hospital and his charming girl friend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling his hand gently! There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanation of dreams, though a bit reasonable, is not accepted by everyone, but it offers an interesting approach to the problem. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true. In other words, a dream is a way of having your wishes carried out. 注意:此部分试题请在答题卡 2 上作答。 57. With the termination of the uncertified teachers and the expected retirement of hundreds more, school system officials said they could have up to 750 vacancies this summer, which would be almost double the usual number. School human resources officials said they have 950 teacher candidates assembled through widely expanded recruitment efforts, including at job fairs in Philadelphia and Detroit. Still, they are working hard to replace 50 librarians, 50 math teachers and 100 special education teachers—high-demand jobs for which there is always a short supply. About 40 special education teachers were among those dismissed June 30, intensifying the shortage. "Do we have enough in the pool to fill the math and special education vacancies? No," said Nicole Wilds, the school system's director of recruitment services. "We're interviewing 30 candidates a week to get them into the pool." Although the 370 uncertified teachers who were fired represented a range of subject areas, those in the largest group—41—taught special education. Those in the second-largest—20—taught in the sciences. About 15 of the teachers taught math. 专业班级 7 8 : 姓名: 学号: 下 装 订 线 上 装 订 线

Janey announced that he was setting a deadline of June 30 for those teachers to obtain their credentials (证书)—or face dismissal. The 370 who lost their jobs were part of a total of 820 who were still uncertified in June. School officials, saying they recognized it would be nearly impossible to fill more than 1,000 vacancies from the loss of uncertified and retiring teachers, decided to give 450 of the uncertified instructors an opportunity to remain with the school system for a year. 注意:此部分试题请在答题卡 2 上作答。 62.
