CHAPTER VII: Review on current status and challenging issues of land subsidence in China (Part I)

Land Subsidence and Flooding in Bangkok In the last thirty years, the area affected by land subsidence in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region (i.e. City of Bangkok and sur-rounding region)has grown to more than 4,550 km2 in size, with maximum subsidence in many localized regions exceeding 1600 mm.the extremely flat and low-lying nature of the terrain, together with differential ground subsidence, renders the region very susceptible to excessive flooding.Unless corrective action is undertaken, the situation will continue to deteriorate, and the socioeconomic penalties will also continue to mount

1.Introduction Land subsidence can be defined as the differential sinking of the ground surface with respect to surrounding terrain or sea level.Land subsidence can result from natural causes such as tectonic motion and sea level rise or man-induced causes such as the withdrawal of groundwater, oil and gas,the extraction of coal and ores and the underground excavation for tunnel and cavern.Land subsidence is usually observed as a series of disastrous phenomena

Land subsidence is usually observed as a series of disastrous phenomena. 1. Introduction

Examples Examples of these phenomena are underground utility lines cracking, seawater intrusion and settlements of buildings and civil infrastructures. Therefore, land subsidence is one of the challenging issues that need to be addressed in many countries including Australia,China,Egypt,France,Germany, India,Iran,Israel,Italy,Japan,Mexico,Poland,Saudi Arabia,Sweden, the Netherlands,UK and USA

Examples Land subsidence has occurred in many areas, particularly in densely populated deltaic regions throughout the world. Most of the major subsidence areas have developed probably since World War ll because of accelerated rates in the use of water and oil and gas from the ground

 Land subsidence has occurred in many areas, particularly in densely populated deltaic regions throughout the world. Most of the major subsidence areas have developed probably since World War II because of accelerated rates in the use of water and oil and gas from the ground. Examples

It was reported in 1995 that there were more than 150 major cities in the world where subsidence were substantial (Barends et al.,1995,1998).Because of the wide distribution of land subsidence and its severe consequence to environment and economy, land subsidence has been one of the topics needing research and technology transfer at the international level
