Unit 2 Communication Problems Useful Information Communication plays an important role in everybody's life.We all need to deliver different messages to get things done. The purpose of communication is to send the messages successfully so that it can be intelligible to its receiver. However, sometimes the message fails to retain what it is when it goes to its receiver and so comes misunderstanding. Undoubtedly, there exist many differences among people.Different genders, different cultural backgrounds, different ways of thinking, different languages, different family backgrounds, and different religions...All these differences may lead to misunderstanding. But the main reason why we fail to understand the message from others is that toward one specific message,we all have our own insights, intuition and ways of understanding.Even the same word may mean differently for two people from the same culture and speaking the same language.Generally our brains will not accept the message which falls beyond the horizon of our minds, and if it does fall within our horizons,we will accept it and understand it in our own way,no matter how others understand it.This is where and how misunderstanding arises. Unfortunately,no one is to blame for misunderstanding and no one is responsible for this kind of situation, because everybody is right from their own perspectives. Surely nobody likes to be misunderstood. Then how to avoid or minimize misunderstand ing?Is it that difficult?Actually we do have ways to avoid or minimize misunderstand ing.Firstly,we must believe that any misunderstanding can be solved. Secondly,we should be aware that the best way to minimize misunderstanding is to communicate. When misunderstanding arises, try to figure out the reasons or where the problem lies. Here is a suggestion:You can write down both of your points of view about the misunderstood topics or issues, then compare and check what exactly causes the misunderstand ing between you. Another important thing worth noting is that there is no harm in appreciating your opponents.Perhaps the misunderstood person was your best friend or any close one, and most of the time you will find that misunderstand ing happens between two parties who are sharing a common goal!So what a pity if you just leave each other alone due to misunderstanding. All the doubts and misunderstanding in any relationships can only reduce your happiness. Therefore just be kind and patient with each other, and try your best to understand each other, then you'll you're your communication is becoming better and better.Just as Albert Schweitzer said,"Constant kindness can accomplish much.As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate
