Unit 1: Never Say goodbye Background information: 1. Family moving The ever-decreasing number of large families in some countries like Britain an America is related to an increase in the migration of population. In the past decades people in Britain have moved from Scotland and the north of England to the Southeast Southwest. East and Central England In America, about 40,000,000 people are mov ing to another place every year, which means that a family moves every five or six years. Young people leave their hometowns and go to the big cities for better jobs and living environments Now things are changing, more and more people are mov ing to live in the suburbs of big cities. Big cities are becoming more crowded and polluted, with a higher rate of crime, less friendly neighborhoods and insufficient public recreational facilities. Meanwhile, in the countryside or small towns with a slower pace of life people can enjoy a more harmonious and comfortable life and have easy access to the facilities available in big cities 2. An episode about‘ saying goodbye” It happened on the morning of a summer day in November, 2002 in Bondi,a small and beautiful town in Sydney, Australia. I was on a two-day visit to Dr. vale Horniman, who used to teach me English Literature in Central China Normal University in Wuhan. Having just been to the town church, we were walking in the quiet street when we met across a lady in her eighties, an old acquaintance of miss Horniman. After the conventional introduction and mutual greetings, I politely said See you as we were leaving her. " No, no, no! said Miss Horniman instantaneously You won't see her! Say good bye! Was it a humor? Or a philosophical truth? Anyway, that was the first time I began to reflect on the actual meaning of saying Goodbye 三、 try to answer the following questions: 1. What made the author's grandpa cry sadly? 2. How long had Grandpa s son been in the war? 3. What is the implication of the authors grandpas words"Never say goodbye "? 4. What did Grand pa ask the author to do even if he and his friends had to part? 5. hat caused the author to return to the old house 6. Why do you think the author's grand pa smiled at him during his last moments? 三、 Structural analysis: 1. Part 1(Paras. 1-4): The author brings up the problem he was confronted with: he found it hard to overcome the sadness as the moment of parting drew near. He turned to his grandpa for help when grandpa came 2. Part 2(Paras. 5-13): The author's grand pa, by narrating his sad experience of the loss of his eldest son during the war, illustrates how one can overcome the sad feeling resulting from the loss of someone dear to him by recalling not the moment of parting but the happy times spent together

Unit 1: Never Say Goodbye 一、Background information: 1. Family moving The ever-decreasing number of large families in some countries like Britain an America is related to an increase in the migration of population. In the past decades, people in Britain have moved from Scotland and the north of England to the Southeast, Southwest, East and Central England. Part 1 (Paras. 1-4): The author brings up the problem he was confronted with: he found it hard to overcome the sadness as the moment of parting drew near. Part 2 (Paras. 5-13): The author’s grandpa, by narrating his sad experience of the loss of his eldest son during the war, illustrates how one can overcome the sad feeling resulting from the loss of someone dear to him by recalling not the moment of parting but the happy times spent together

Part 3 (Paras. 14-20): In the third part, by the way he behaved when confronted with another sad moment, the loss of his grandpa, the author shows us that he came to understand what his grandpa had taught him. 四. Language Work 1. confront: v. be faced with and have to deal with; meet 面临,面对,遇到 We must confront the future with optimism.
