Background Information (1) September 11, 2001 attacks On the sunny morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists, working in teams of 4 or 5, hijacked four commercial jetliners and turned them toward targets chosen for destruction. Two of the planes, loaded with passengers, were flown at full speed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in the financial district of New York City. The buildings burst into flames and then collapsed, killing thousands. A third terrorist crew smashed their plane into the Pentagon, headquarters of the U.S. military in Arlington, Virginia. The hijackers of the fourth airliner apparently intended to hit another target in Washington, D.C., but the passengers on the plane

realized what was happening and fought back.This airplane crashed in a field in rural Pennsylvania. (2)Terrorism Terrorism is the use of violence.or the threat of violence,to create a climate of fear in agiven population.Terrorist violence targets ethnic religious groups governments,and political parties. corporations,and media enterprises.Organizations that in acts of terro are usually small in size and fear generated by their violence,which seck to magnify their inluence and power to affect political change on either a local or an international scale. (3)Remarks by the President Less than One Hour after the Attack I want to reassure the American people that the full resources of the federal government are working to assist local authorities to save lives and to help the victims of these attacks.Makeno mistake:The United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts. I've been in regular contact with the Vice President,the Secretary of Defens the national security team and my Cabinet.We have taken all appropriate security precautions to protect the American people.Our military at home and around the world is on high alert status,and we have taken the necessary security precautions to continue the functions of your government. We have been in touch with the leaders of Congress and with world leaders to assure them that we will do whatever is necessary to protect America and Americans.
