Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage: I was born with a disability that affects my sense of balance, causing me to walk with a limp. Not only does it affect the function of the legs, but it also has an impact on the kidneys. The disability has had its ups and downs. As a young child, I can remember the way other children would stare at me because of the way that I walked. There were many times that my schoolmates would laugh at me and call me names simply because of their lack of understanding, especially back in the mid 70s and early 80s. Children then were just unwilling to take the time to learn why one of their classmates might walk, speak or seem noticeably different from themselves. Now that I am an adult, I have noticed that the stares and names have begun to fade, and judgments that once were negative have begun to turn toward acceptance. The signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has played a great deal in breaking down some of those barriers that, as a child, left me to fight a war that seemed to have no end. Now I look beyond what I can’t do and focus on what I can. I have learned that limitations open doors that have been closed, showing other ways to meet our needs. I have always looked at life as a challenge, grasping each obstacle with open arms. There is nothing in this world that comes easy. I must stand tall and look forward, to be ever so ready for what still lies ahead. People often feel sorry for those who were born with some type of disability. But their compassion(怜悯) is misplaced. Yes, I may not be able to run as fast or perform certain tasks, but my disability gives me a better look at life and all that’s around me. I want to be seen not as a disability but as a person who has, and will continue to, bloom (成长). So I decided to become an advocate (倡导者) on behalf of disabled Americans, to fight for our rights that for so long have been ignored. I feel that it only takes one powerful voice to change the minds of many nations, and as long as I have a mouth to use and a mind to think I will continue to work to bring peace upon the disabled community. 16. Why did children stare at the author when he was young? A. He walked in an uneven way. B. He often lost his balance and fell to the ground. C. He had an appearance quite different from others. D. He spoke in a different way from others. 17. It can be inferred from the passage that in the 1970s, disabled children_______. A. were not accepted by their peers B. received different treatment at school C. had frequent fights with their classmates D. had ups and downs in their life 18. Being disabled, the author _____. A. has lost many a battle in his life B. looks at life as a challenge C. focuses on the limitations he has to suffer D. is angry for the many opportunities he has lost 19. According to the author, his disability_______. A. has given him a better understanding of life B. aroused sympathy from people around him C. is a constant barrier between him and the community D. has prevented him from growing up to a full person 20. Passage Two Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage: People born in the autumn live longer than those born in the spring and are less likely to fall chronically ill when they are older, according to an Austrian scientist. Using census data for more than one million people in Austria, Denmark and Australia, scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in the northern German town of Rostock found the month of birth was related to life expectancy over the age of 50. Seasonal differences in what mothers ate during pregnancy, and infections occurring at different times of the year could both have an impact on the health of a new-born baby and could influence its life expectancy in older age. "A mother giving birth in spring spends the last phase of her pregnancy in winter, when she will eat less vitamins than in summer," said Gabriele Doblhammer, one of a team of scientists who carried out the research. "When she stops breast-feeding and starts giving her baby normal food, it’s in the hot weeks of summer when babies are prone to infections of the digestive system." In Austria, adults born in autumn (October-December) lived about seven months longer than those born in spring (April-June), and in Denmark adults with birthdays in autumn outlived those born in spring by about four months. In the southern hemisphere, the picture was similar. Adults born in the Australian autumn - the European spring - lived about four months longer than those born in the Australian spring. The study focused on people born at the beginning of the 20th century, using death certificates and census data. Although nutrition at all times of the year has improved since then, the seasonal pattern persists, Doblhammer said. 21. In this passage, the scientists based their conclusions on ________________. A. their experiments in their laboratories B. their research work with census data for more than one million people in Austria, Denmark and Australia C. their record of census data for more than one million people in the world D. their research work with population for more than one million people in Europe 22. According to the passage, which of the following statements is not true? A. People born in the autumn live longer than those born in the spring. B. People born in the spring are less likely to fall chronically ill in their life. C. People born in the autumn are less likely to fall chronically ill when they are older. D. The month of birth was related to life expectancy over the age of 50. 23. What, according to the passage, would be the major impacts on the health of a new-born baby? A. Different seasons. B. The mother’s health. C.The different temperature. D. Mother’s food during pregnancy and infections. 24. The word “prone” in the ninth line may mean ______________. A. liable B. difficult C. hard D. quick 25. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. Seasonal Difference and Its Effect. B. The Result of a Census Data. C. People Born in Autumn Live Longer. D. A Meaningful Scientific Research. Passage Three Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage: Pet owners have long believed their companion loved them back. Scientists once scoffed, but now they’re coming around. Everyone who’s ever owned a pet has at least one story (usually many, actually) of an animal that seems just as emotional as any human. For decades, psychologists have discounted the idea that pets can love their humans back. They have argued that animals that appear to express emotions are merely reacting to hormonal rushes triggered ---in cold, but typical, technical language---by “outside stimuli.” But that view is changing. With new evidence gleaned from studies of dogs, chimps and sundry other creatures, science is starting to catch up to what pet owners have always suspected: animals experience surges of deep-seated fear, jealousy and grief, and most important, love. More and more pet owners now depend on their furry and feathered friends for emotional support. People are delaying having children, but they still need that connection, that love. For many in that crowd, pets are serving as surrogate kids. Researchers are finding that chimps, dogs, cats, birds, rats and even animals as "simple" as the lowly octopus---all of them experience fear, the most ancient of the emotions. Many animals may feel something akin to love as well. Not surprisingly, the animal that has shown researchers the most emotional complexity thus far is the dog. Bred as human companions for thousands of years, dogs have evolved into master communicators. Recent studies show they are even better

They may be equally adept at expressing their own feelings and personalities. Comparing human emotions to animals' may be like comparing color vision to black-and-white--- they're the same concept, but the former is immensely more complex. And as for love, pets adore their owners, to be sure---but not in the way that we love our own families. What drives them to be affectionate is pretty primitive: food, shelter, attachment. Science is finally starting to realize that animals have real emotions. But we can’t just treat them like humans. And, of course, there are still scientists who refuse to accept the idea of any animal emotion at all, save fear. 26. This passage is mainly concerned with ___________. The only thing you can do is experiment 32 you find a system that does work for you. But two things are sure: 33 else can do your studying for you, and unless you do find a system that works, you won’t get through college. Meantime, there are a few rules that 34 for everybody. The hint is “don’t get 35 ”.The problem of studying, 36 enough to start with, becomes almost 37 when you are trying to do three 38 in one weekend. 39 the fastest readers have trouble 40 that. And if you are behind in written work that must be 41, the teacher who accepts it 42 late will probably not give you good credit. Perhaps he may not accept it 43. Getting behind in one class because you are spending so much time on another is really no 44. Feeling pretty virtuous about the seven hours you spend on chemistry won’t 45 one bit if the history teacher pops a quiz. And many freshmen do get into trouble by spending too much time on one class at the 46 of the others, either because they like one class much better or because they find it so much harder that they think, they should 47 all their time to it. 48 the reason, doing the whole work for one class and neglecting the rest of them is a mistake.
