Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One Although Thomas Jefferson did not begin the effort of designing the University of Virginia until late in his life, the education of the common man had occupied his thoughts for decades. He believed ignorance(无知)to be the enemy of freedom, and he wanted to correct what he considered to be the weaknesses of educational institutions(机构)modeled on European settings. He imagined that an “academical village” around a tree-lined lawn would provide an ideal setting in which to pursue higher education. The center of such a village would be a Temple of Knowledge that would house the university library. When Virginia decided to set up a state university in 1818,the retired U.S.President finally was able to devote his talent, time, and energy to creating this new kind of educational institution. By the time he was finished with his design, Jefferson had invented an entirely new American setting for higher education: the college campus. In 1812, Jefferson chose to begin building his “academical village,” the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, VA, far away from the city center. He intended this spot to promote learning because it was natural and unspoiled, and far from anything that could distract or harm the students, The University consists of two rows of houses, five on each side, leading to a main building. This main building, the Rotunda, became the most important part of the University, because it contained the library. By focusing his entire institution on the library, instead of around the church, Jefferson revolutionized American university architecture. Jefferson’s aim was to create a new institutional form for his ideal educational system, a system he thought should give every citizen the information he needs for carrying out his daily business. This new approach to citizenship and education demanded a new type of university, one where students and professors could coexist and share ideas. He attempted to create this environment by combining the professors’ houses and students’ classrooms, and linking all the buildings with covered walkways so intellectual exchanges between departments could go on smoothly. Jefferson had also recognized the importance of the students’ whole life, and given much thought and planning to the students’ dining, living, and exercise facilities(设施). Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage: 16. Jefferson devoted much of his thought to the education of the common man because he believed A. everyone who loved freedom hated ignorance B. a country could not be strong without education C. an uneducated man could not gain full freedom D. European educational institutions did not suit America 17. According to Jefferson, the center of a university should be___________. A. the church B. the classrooms C. the lawn D. the library 18. Jefferson chose to locate the University of Virginia far away from the city center because __________. A. land in the city center could not be found B. there was a tree-lined lawn there C. this was a European tradition D. there was no distraction for the students 19 In Jefferson’s view, an ideal educational system should_____________. 得 分 评卷人

What was made easy by the revolutionized American campus? A. Students’learning. B. Professor’s teaching C. Intellectual exchange D. Both students’and professors’ life Passage Two Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage: Grandma Moses is among the most celebrated twentieth-century painters of the United States, yet she has barely started painting before she was in her late seventies. As she once said of herself: “I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.” No one could have had a more productive old age. She was born Anna Mary Robertson on a farm in New York State. At twelve she left home and was in domestic service until, at twenty-seven,she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927. Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery pictures as a hobby, but only switched to oils in old age because her hands had become too stiff to sew and she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a fair, and were soon spotted by a dealer who bought everything she painted. Three of the pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930s and her death she produced some 2, 000 pictures: detailed and lively portrayals(画)of the rural life she had known for so long, with a marvelous sense of color and form. “I think real hard till I think of something real pretty, and then I paint it, ” she said. 21. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Grandma Moses:Her Best Exhibition B. The Children of Grandma Moses C. Grandma Moses:A Biographical Sketch D. Grandma Moses spent most of her life________. A. nursing B. painting C. embroidering D. farming 25. The word “spotted” (in the second sentence of Para. 3) could best be replaced by A. speckled B. noticed C. featured D. damaged Passage Three Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage: Most of us have an image of such a normal or standard English in pronunciation, and very commonly in Great Britain this is “Received Pronunciation”, often associated with the public schools, Oxford, and for English taught as a foreign language it is more usually the ideal than any other pronunciation. At the same time, it must be remembered that, so far as the English-speaking countries are concerned, this “Received Pronunciation” approaches the status of a “standard” almost only in England: educated Scots, Irishmen, Americans, Australians, and other have their own different images of a standard form English. Even in England it is difficult to speak of a standard in pronunciation. Pronunciation is infinitely variable, so that even given the will to adopt a single pronunciation, it would be difficult to achieve. The word “dance” may be pronounced in a doze ways even by people who do not think of themselves as dialect speakers: there is no sure way of any two people saying the same word with precisely the same sound. In this respect, pronunciation much more closely resembles handwriting than spelling. In spelling, there are absolute distinctions which can be learnt and imitated with complete precision: one can know at once whether word is spelt in a “standard” way or not. But two persons’ handwriting and pronunciation may both be perfectly intelligible, yet have obvious differences without our being able to say which is “better” or “standard”. 26. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. English pronunciation, spelling and handwriting

It has always been a problem to decide whether “popular music” is music meant to be heard by the people 31 is simply music that 32 . The same problem of definition exists with jazz.So many different types of music have been called jazz 33 that it is hard to say 34 .Jazz has always been considered 35 black music but when I first 36 it twenty years ago, I used to hear white bands playing music that was like Louis Armstrong’s in the 1920s, I found out afterwards that they learnt to do this by playing his records 37 until their style was 38 his for them to imitate him. Since then white singers 39 Bob Dylan have rediscovered their own folk tradition, instead of 40 black roots. But the main changes since 1960 have been social and technical. One is that young people have more money 41 records at an earlier age than they 42 ,so Tin Pan Alley, the “pop” music industry, aims 43 teenage audience. 44 that electronic equipment has developed 45 extent that technicians are now 46 sound to produce recordings that are quite different from a live performance. But the real problem with “pop” music is that Tin Pan Alley has always worked against 47 a genuine music of the people. It takes everything original and natural out of it and 48 cheap commercial imitations. 49 the American folk singer, Woody Guthrie, said, “They’ve always preferred the 50 songs.
