Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage: A study suggests that dirty air can reduce lung development. Researchers at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles published their work in the New England Journal of Medicine. About one thousand seven hundred children from different communities in Southern California took part in the study. The scientists tested the children every year for eight years, starting at the age ten. They say this is the longest study ever done on air pollution and the health of children. The scientists found that children who lived in areas with the dirtiest air were five times more likely to grow up with weak lungs. Many were using less than eight percent of normal lung strength to breathe. The damage from dirty air was as bad as that found in children with parents who smoke. Children with reduced lung power may suffer more severe effects from a common cold, for example. But the researchers express greater concerns about long-term effects. They say adults normally begin to lose one percent of their lung power each year after age twenty. The doctors note that weak lung activity is the second leading cause of early deaths among adults. The first is smoking. By the time people are eighteen, their lungs are fully developed, or close to it. The doctors say it is impossible to recover from any damage. Researchers say they are still not sure how air pollution affects lung development. They believe that pollution affects the tiny air spaces where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged. Arden Pope is an economics professor at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Professor Pope wrote a commentary about the study. He noted that air quality in Southern California has improved since the study began in the early nineteen-nineties. Clean-air laws have reduced pollution from vehicles, industry and other causes. But dirty air is still a problem in areas of California and other places. Professor Pope says continued efforts to improve air quality are likely to provide additional improvements in health. 16. A study done by researchers at the University of Southern California indicates that ____________. A. 1,700 children from Southern California have weak lung activities B. children in Southern California use less lung strength to breathe C. air pollution may affect the growth of children’s lungs D. 80 percent of children in Southern California suffer from air pollution 17. D. air pollution does even greater harm to children’s health than their parents’smoking Passage Two Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage: The English have the reputation of being very different from all other nationalities. It is claimed that living on an island separated from the rest of Europe has much to do with it. Whatever the reasons, it may be fairly stated that the Englishman has developed some attitudes and habits distinguishing him from other nationalities. Broadly speaking, the Englishman is a quiet, shy, and reserved person among people he knows well. Before strangers he often seems inhibited, even embarrassed. You have only to witness a railway compartment any morning or evening to see the truth. Serious-looking businessmen and women sit reading their newspapers or dozing(打盹)in a corner, and no one speaks. An English wit once suggested to overseas visitors, “On entering a railway compartment shake hands with all the passengers.” Needless to say, he was not being serious. There is an unwritten but clearly understood code of behavior, which, if broken, makes the person immediately the object of suspicion. It is well known that the English seldom show openly extremes of enthusiasm, emotion etc. Of course, an Englishman feels no less than any other nationality. Imagine a man commenting on the great beauty of a young girl. A man of more emotional temperament might describe her as “a marvelous jewel”, while the Englishman will flatly state “Um, she's all right.” An Englishman may recommend a highly successful and enjoyable film to friends by commenting, “It’s not bad.” The overseas visitors must not be disappointed by this apparent lack of interest. They must realize that “all right”, “not bad” are very often used with the sense of “first class”, “excellent”. This special use of language is particularly common in English. 21. One explanation for the different character of English people is that ________. A. they are geographically isolated from the European continent B. they have nothing to do with the other Europeans C. they like to keep quiet among their acquaintances D. they tend to be reserved by nature 22. The word “inhibited” (Line 2, Para. 2) in this passage probably means ________ . A. unable to have good manners B. unable to express and relax freely C. able to act properly D. able to talk freely 23. According to the passage, on entering a railway compartment, an overseas visitor is expected to ________ . A. inquire about the code of behavior in the train B. shake hands with all the passengers C. shake hands with the person he knows D. behave like an Englishman 24. The English way of commenting on something or somebody suggests that ________. A. the English are modest in most circumstances B. the English feel no less than any other nationality C. the English tend to display less emotion than they feel

What does the passage mainly discuss? A. The differences between the English and the other Europeans. B. The different character of the Englishman and its reason. C. The reasons for English people’s shyness. D. The code of behavior of the nationalities in Europe. Passage Three Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage: As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body. Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill heath. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities, others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever from, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between “flight or fight” and in more primitive days the choice made the difference between life and death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but how little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart diseases have established links with stress. Since we can not remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it. 26. What is the central point of the passage? A. Stress is a bad thing to one’s mind and body. B. Stress is unavoidable. C. We should not remove stress because our motivation stems from stress. D. High blood pressure and heart diseases come from stress. 27. People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because ___________. A. they regard working as their greatest enjoyment B. they believe that work is superior to relaxation C. they are traveling fast all the time D. they are becoming busier with their work 28. According to the author, the most important character for a good manager is his ____________. A. unyielding will to hold out against stress B. knowing the art of relaxation C. high sense of responsibility D. having control over performance 29. Which of the following statements is true, according to the passage? A. We can find quite a few ways to avoid stress. B. Stress is always harmful to people’s health. C. It’s easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work. D. Different people can withstand different amount of stress. 30. In the last sentence of the passage, “do so” refers to _________. A. expose ourselves to stress B. find ways to deal with stress C. remove stress from our lives D. establish links between diseases and stress Passage Four Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage: Without plants, people could not live. We eat plants. We breathe the oxygen that plants produce. And we need plants for another very different reason: we need them for their beauty. Imagine a world with no plants. Imagine no flowers with their sweet smells, their beautiful colors and their lovely shapes. Imagine when the wind blows, not being able to hear the leaves in the trees open and turn to colorful blossom. Everywhere people need the beauty of plants. That is why even in big modern cities, we have parks full of trees, bushes
