When reading a passage such as this one competent readers rapidly and smoothly focus on successive groups of words and can nearly immediately summarize what those words mean. Closer analysis of the actions of competent readers reveals that they rapidly convert written symbols into more familiar spoken language from which they apprehend the meaning of the text.
