These days,I read more poems from her.Each of her poems takes me into the world she creates.And I start to find the complexity of her inner world behind her seemingly simple words. Part 2 Analysis (1)Her art of depiction She can always describe things detailedly and vividly,which makes it easy for me to form the picture in my mind to rebuild the world she tries to create. In the poem I felt a funeral in my brain,she writes about her imaginary experience of a dead person before he enters another world.She cleverly chooses the angle of the sense of hearing, which makes me feel just like the speaker-with my eyes closed,maybein the coffin,and the only way I can feel the world is to hear.As time goes on,the noise at the funeral becomes louder and louder and even "across my soul".Suddenly,everything changes-the noisy world turns to be silent.-it's time to enter another world. Emily's art of depiction is also fully shown in A narrow fellow in the grass.She doesn't even tell us the object of the poem but we can easily find the answer-the snake.It's because she chooses the typical features of snake such as"narrow","the grass divides as with a comb","he likes a boggy acre"and so on.And all these episodes together establish the vivid image of the snake. She also pays much attention to the details.In I heard a fly buzz-when I died,the sound of the fly changes from "buzz"to "uncertain stumbling buzz",and finally the world becomes silent.It shows the process of death-from consciousness to unconsciousness

She compares fame to a fickle food in Fame is a fickle food to point out the property of fame- temporary and dependent on the surroundings.Thus it's can turn to be poisonous-"Men eat of it and die."The features of fame and the result of chasing after it are both embodied by the excellent metaphor. In I felt a funeral in my brain,"all the heavens were a bell,and being but an ear"is also a nice metaphor.It makes the abstract feeling concrete.When I read the sentence,I feel that I am in the process of death,hearing what the speaker is hearing and experiencing what the speaker is experiencing. (2)The word choice As one of the most popular poets in the history,there is no doubt that Emily is good at word choice. Take I heard a Fly buzz-when i died as an example,in the sentence"the eyes around-had wrung them dry",she uses the word "wrung"to emphasize the sorrow of the people around.And in “there interposed a fly'”,“interposed”is utilized instead of words or phrases like“appear”and” show up"because it does not just appear,it seperates the speaker from the light which seems to be the King. In There is no frigate like a book,the effect of the proper words is clearer.The poet tries to convey us her view on book-powerful.She compares book to"frigate",implying the exploration, "coursers",implying coolness and speed,and"chariot",implying the function of book-bearing a human soul.The meaning of the poem is mostly based on these three words.If we replaces them with“ship”,"horse'”and“car”,the poem will not be as powerful as it is now. (3)My questions Because I was deeply impressed by the peaceful process of death that is described in Because I could not stop for Death,I got interested in Emily's opinion about death.So I choose two of the poems about death in the list-Ifelt a funeral in my brain and I heard a fly buzz when I died. But I was surprised at the fact that the death process in these two poems seems to be different from that in the first poem. First,the speaker is not relaxed and happy.Instead,he hears something that is not so pleasant the noise of the funeral and the buzz of the fly. Besides,death does not lead to immortality and eternity any more.The two poems both end with the lost connection with the world and don't show a signal of a brand new world or any hope. I was very confused.What makes the change of the attitude of the poet? I searched some information on the Internet and find out that it's not because the poet changes her view.In fact,she is trying to figure out what death really means all the time.The religious background of the family and the environment makes her believe the existence of God.But the sorrow she experienced in her life and her independent thinking raise doubts about it in her mind. She even wrote poems to question the existence of God. She thinks of the death and immortality throughout her life.I don't know if she gets the answer. But I'm glad to see she came to a conlusion-the immortality of our soul cannot depend only on

Learning the life experience of Emily Dickinson helps me understand her poems better.It's really important for us to appreciate poems.The poem is not just a combination of words.It's the reflection of the poet himself.The descriptions,the emotions,the ideas in the poems are all in relationship with what the poet experiences.Only when we try to understand the poet's life can we really get into the poem. 2013.6.1
