In terms of its systematic position, the Phenomenology of Spirit is Hegel's first truly systematic work, and although it remains the 'entrance to philosophy' , the introduction, the empirical science of consciousness is already science itself, so that it represents the real maturity of Hegel's thought. In the history of the influence of Hegel's thought, the Phenomenology of Spirit is the most influential work of Hegel (although not the most important for Hegel himself), and Marx once said that the Phenomenology of Spirit was "the birthplace and secret of Hegel's philosophy". The revival of Hegelianism in the 20th century was accompanied by a rediscovery of the Phenomenology of Spirit.
