Since Descartes, the mind has entered the central topic of Western philosophy, and since the second half of the 20th century, analytical philosophy of mind have made important breakthroughs in mind research. In analytical tradition, new theories and argumentations have emerged around the nature of mind, consciousness, intentionality, other minds, and self-knowledge, etc. Analytical philosophy of mind are integrated with cognitive science, computer science, brain neuroscience, etc., and are also involved in the dialogue with the phenomenological tradition. Philosophy of mind has become a necessary knowledge and ability training in the study of philosophy. This Chinese-English course is an advanced course for undergraduate majoring in philosophy. The course will introduce students to become familiar with the core questions of analytic philosophy, which include: Fundamental metaphysical questions of the mind, i.e., what is the nature of the mind, and what is the relationship between the mind and the body? Questions about consciousness i.e. what is consciousness and what is its place in nature? Questions about intentionality, how the mind represents things, and is the content of the mind determined by the brain, or by the environment? We shall also considerate some points concerning the nature of mind in traditional Chinese philosophy. The instructors will guide students to understand some basic concepts and viewpoints by learning introductory textbook, and to practice philosophical analysis and arguments by reading relevant texts.
