In this unit we have done three activities:Activity 1 Abstraction: From Immediate Experiences to Abstract Concepts;Activity 2 Understand Time in Language, and Activity 3 Towards an Understanding of a Symbolic World

In Activity 1 we looked at (1)objects, (2)the qualities of objects, and (3) actions we do.These three are essentials that our world is made of. We use language to name them and to categorize them, through a very complicated process of abstraction. The results of the abstract process are concepts that are realized in words

In Activity 2 we looked at time.Time is associated with that we do.We measure it in terms of the recycling movements of some objects, such as the sun movement from the east to the west;the moon movement from the new moon to a quarter moon,to the full moon, and to the last quarter, and so on.In a smaller scale, the repeatedly circling movements of clock hands tell us the hour, the minute, and the second

Activity 3 was an integration of the ideas discussed in Activity 1 and 2. The key point was expressed in the title:Towards as Understanding of a Symbolic World. We humans generate a symbolic world by constructing our experiences of the material world through language

Up to now,we can see language as an abstract entity with tangible skins. From Unit 4 onwards, the focus of our attention is on what sort of things we do in using language.Technically we call such understanding of language as functionally analysis

There are four major functions which are discussed in four units.Unit4 is on the function of organizing our experiences of the material world. We experience an object through our senses. This experience is vague, slippery and temporary. We use language to make it clear, frozen and stored for future use
